Surge in plastics production defies environmental backlash

Surge in plastics production defies environmental backlash (FT)

  • According to the American Chemistry Council, the shale rush in North America has set off an unprecedented wave of expenditure of at least US$200bn pledged to companies such as ExxonMobil, Dow, BP, and Shell to build new chemical production facilities.
  • The expansion comes at a time when the era of EV’s threatens to collapse the demand for petrol and petrochemicals – plastics in particular – are seen as a way to fill the gap.
  • However, changes in public opinion have been fuelling a backlash against plastic items, with authorities introducing bans on disposable items and formulating action plans to support the uptake of alternative/recycled materials, while trade tensions and a weak global economy have put additional pressure on petrochemical producers.
  • In the US, producers’ margins for high-density PE have almost halved since peaking in 2017, while European facilities have seen margins fall by more than three-quarters by the end of 2019; and were negative in Asia.

Analysis and Comments

  • This is a longer article that is well worth the read as it highlights both sides of the on-going debate on the future demand for petrochemicals.
  • On one hand you have people calling plastics “the most egregious example of a gap between what the industry is expecting and what society demand”, while others think of the current situation as being “(…) much more a PR battle for the chemicals companies than (…) an actual demand threat”
  • In the analyst view, the increasing backlash from the public and the US/China trade war alongside the introductions of widespread bans on single-use items (China being the latest to announce its ban) have created material headwinds that are likely to grow stronger over time and are contributing to pressure on producers’ margins. This situation looks unlikely to clear up any time soon.
  • It seems like ultimately the core of the argument is around whether more durable uses for plastics (e.g. cars/EVs, household goods, and medical devices) can make up for the potential drop in demand on the packaging side.
  • As a reminder, packaging makes up c. 40% of resin consumption in Europe and according to Data, 42% of all plastics entering the use phase globally (2015).

Oh very cool to see more eco-green community "out there". Sunscribed! Still wrapping my head around the community in beta-steempeak and how the whole cross-posting thing works. But awesome step forward.

As long as we keep fracking going then there's going to be short supply of ethane to keep making plastic so fuckit, lets keep eating microplastics and die, its really the only option we have at this point

There is SO MUCH tension and contradiction in the plastics debate. I suspect we have made enough plastic to be merrily recycled for the next 5 centuries at least. Methinks NEW plastic production needs to stop.

Dear @vlemon

Interesting choice of topic. Thanks for sharing so many details with us.

what is "era of EV’s" ?I wonder what does EV stands for.

The way I see it is that we all should care about environment. At the same time it's quite obvious that politicians are using topics like 'climate change', 'fighting with plastic' for their own gains.

I've been arguing with my wife few times about recycling - somehow I don't believe it's working at all. Based on my knowledge we (regular people) seem to try so hard to separate plastic from other rubbish, however majority of this trash is being dumped altogether and nothing really is being recycled.

I wish I was wrong.

ps. This kind of post would definetly fit project.hope HIVE :)

Also ... do you play holybread? :) cool. I quite enjoy that game as well. I wonder when will I get bored (I slowly am getting there).

Upvote on the way :)
Yours, Piotr

Hello there !

Thank you for your nice comment. I also believed the trash mixing was famous in Europe during the past years (in south of France or southern countries) but due to people say pressure it kind of stopped.

But the recycling is just able to recycle 20-30% of our waste and I am being optimistic.

We need to get this to a higher level but a lot of companies are actually working on it.

I make a lot of these kind of posts and would be very happy to share them on project hope.

I added you on discord.

PS: don’t argue with your wife on this you will always loose 😂

Best,

@vlemon

EV is short hand for Electric Vehicle. I had to look that up when I first read an article on them myself. 🤣

Hi again @minismallholding

Can I ask you for little favour? I joined contest called "Community of the week" with project I manage and I would be grateful if you could RESTEEM it and help me get some exposure and drop some encouraging comment :)

Link to my post: on steemit or on steempeak

Thanks :)
