YouTube Censoring Putting Steem Back On The Map

One positive coming out of the recent YouTube censoring move is the fact that Steem is getting some attention.

While there is great debate as to what exactly is taking place, the fact remains that many YouTubers who discuss cryptocurrency has their videos taken down. YouTube is claiming, according to some reports, that is was only videos with links that were affected. Who knows what the situation.

And quite frankly, who cares?

The bottom line is YouTube is a centralized entity that has the ability to do this. It is no different from what Twitter and Facebook did last year with their purges. The reason is really not relevant when one gets down to it. The fact that the power is within their hands should be what is getting the attention.

Fortunately, some of the crypto news sites are running articles discussing the alternatives. Since it is really nothing new, it is a reminder to people of what is out there. At worst, other options should be utilized as a way to remove so much control from the hands of the big behemoth, YouTube.

The latest appeared on Bitcoin.com. It was an article that spelled out a number of decentralized alternatives to YouTube. Fortunately, D.Tube and Steemit was mentioned in there.

Here is what they had to say:

Steemit-associated Dtube (warning: some Dtube thumbnail images may be NSFW) claims to be “the first crypto-decentralized video platform, built on top of the STEEM Blockchain and the IPFS peer-to-peer network.” The Interplanetary File System (IPFS) and Steem blockchain are leveraged so that “D.Tube is not able to censor videos, nor enforce guidelines.” Rewards and monetization are made possible via Steem, Dtube Coin, and others. While still growing and viewed as very promising by many, periodic issues with the IPFS protocol struggling to accommodate user requests has been noted.

Certainly, nobody will make the claim that D.Tube rivals YouTube. There is no doubt that, at times, there are issues with D.Tube and the IPFS system. This is a challenge that needs to be overcome. We are still in the early stages of technology and decentralized, in simply terms, is not up to par with the centralized counterparts.

That said, as a back-up or additional stream, the alternative serves a good purpose. It is also important to support platforms such as this which are working to bring decentralized solutions to market. YouTube of a decade ago was not what it is today.

Ultimately, as we see the development keep moving forward, getting the name out there is of great help. Over the last couple days, D.Tube and Steemit showed up in a number of places. There were probably half a dozen articles I came across which promoted those two sites. While not akin to being talked about by the President like Bitcoin, it is something.

The fact that people remember the names tells us something. There is a stigma with Steem but it is not something that cannot be overcome. Ultimately, the fact that we are still around tells a great deal of the story. Staying power means a lot in this industry and we are providing that.

With so many applications and tribes being created, we are starting to see a big enough cross-section that we provide solutions to some problems that arise. The fact that we offer censorship resistant and immutable platforms means that we can provide an alternative to any campaign that YouTube and Facebook throw at it.

This is the greatest asset that Steem has. Since it is an open network, we see projects that are going in every direction. It seems chaotic and lacking in organization, which it is. However, the advantage is that progress is being made on all fronts. With so many options to choose from, we are seeing the ability to provide answers in many different areas. This will only keep growing.

Now, the challenge is to get the name of @threespreak out there and into these same articles.
