Fascinating! It's kinda just an identity thing really.. you morph to fit in with those around you? I'm a big believer in flexible, evolving languages.. any standardisation seems a bit authoritarian to me. I live in largely WASP (White Anglo saxon) Australia... any change across states here is barely noticeable, although migrant communities have their own particular inflections, particularly Greeks/Lebanese... I love variety, me. It speaks of who you are and where you come from.

I was surprised when an English couple started commenting on the way they spoke and found it irritating too
I know locals will always pick on each other especially when they think you have forgotten your roots (fair enough to a point) but when foreigners do it... I wasn't too sure after that :D
