[Hardstyle] Nicky Havey - Drop It (Blockchain Music Contest - What Is Hardstyle?! Haha!)

New Genre?

"Hardstyle? What on God's Green Earth is that?!" I asked at the computer screen loudly when I found myself reading through @inthenow's contest requirements for Round 3 of the Blockchain Music Contest. So I needed to do a bit of education around this genre as I had NO CLUE what was going on here. Thankfully inthenow always provides a link to a couple of tracks or sets to give us a pretty full idea of what the genre is about. So what is it? Let me try and explain!

Hardstyle

Firstly, everywhere I looked, the tempo that was always mentioned was 150BPM. Nice. Easy. I can do that, I'm used to life in 174BPM, what's a few BPM less? Well, not as easy as I thought as there are many changing parts to this genre in just one track alone!

After a high energy build with plenty of claps and riser effects that welcomes you in to the start of the track, there's a "Hard House" element which brings in the heavy and dark sounds. Slightly different to your normal house as it's set at a faster tempo (usually house ranges from 120-128BPM, whereas we're now at 150BPM). Hey, I like this and from last week's psytrance genre, I could get in to it... and then the third section...

text16.png

Well, what a transformation from the Hard House bit as the punch you get from the kick drum is well and truly removed from its original glory. Plenty of distortion, loads of effects and modifications to the EQ (frequency spectrum), some more distortion and EQ changes, and whilst you're at it, a little more distortion and hey, you have yourself a hardstyle kick! For some one who is so used to the kick drum being a prominent feature in my Drum & Bass tracks, it was a shock to hear it but this is not the only part of the transformation. Oh no.

The other part of the transformation involves putting in massive, and I'm talking MASSIVE, lead synths and cheesy melodies flying around the place like fireflies on acid. Why not chuck in some random vocals as well? The more aggressive the better, this is Hardstyle after all and hey presto, you have a 3 part track which makes no sense but it's in your face, loud and ready for any crazy fool who is armed with some glowsticks and and the happy pills (I don't advocate drug use btw).

My Entry - Drop It

So when I found out about all these factors that contribute to a Hardstyle track, I spent a few days watching YouTube tutorials on how to get that epic distortion on the kick drum and how to get the lead synth sounds. I searched online for some vocal packs and, thanks to MasktoKill for a generous offering of in your face vox, whacked them in as well.

I really tried my best this week to move so far out of my comfort zone and I apologise to any Hardstyle fans here that may be offended! I'm a Trance and DnB head so this is my best shot and I won't go anywhere near it again I promise haha!

For those of you wanting to hear DnB again, just wait until tomorrow, I'll be back to normal LOL!

For now, get your glowsticks, we're raving!

Nicky

Duuuuude!!!! Tour explanation had me laughing as I read through your humour but also understand the complications.

All I can say is, I don't think anyone needs happy pills to enjoy this one. This track goes right in and takes out that natural party high to surface. Oh but can't forget the glow sticks. We need those.

Now see me going on the dance floor! 🌇🌃🍹🎶🎶🎶🎧🖤🖤🖤

Haha hey meuf! Glad you found it funny and entertaining! Although I found this one really tough to make, I'm actually pretty happy with the results even if it doesn't do that well in the contest. Always good to try new things out.

I'm one of those who likes giving things a go before I say whether I like it or not. I probably won't venture in to this genre again but it was a unique and fun experience thanks to @inthenow for the challenge!

Well, glad you don't need the happy pills haha! Let's get the glowsticks and make some crazy shapes!

Well I will be taking advantage of this one if it's the only one you give us. I will take what I can get! Even though this is the first time you dip your toes in this genre, you pulled through and made something great. And to be successful at it shows just how talented you are!

Haha I should have made it free download I guess! I'll send you a copy later on 😉

Thanks for the kind words meuf! Well, it's down to the judges to see how much of a successful venture in to hardstyle this was haha

I do blame it on Mandy (who's Mandy? 🤔) it was too trance like and not psytrance I think but I got a track out of it that I'll release in the next few months which is great 😀

Turns out, Mandy is my best friend hahah.
I'd have to hear the difference a little more to see the difference. Always something to gain from it though 😊

There are subtle differences. Basically the bassline has to be just 1 tone the whole way through and can't have any melody to it. Mine did because I'm me and crazy like that :D

You did you and I think that's awesome! That's what makes it yours and different. Don't ever change 😉💙

wow - It's amazing what you created. Nice findings with the vocals - they fit totally great...and even your "MASSIVE" leads don't make me wanting to push the "stop"button haha - as it was with all hardstyle tracks I listened to, to get an idea about this genre. Because of those leads I decided not to do a hardstyle track.
Soooo congratz - you did it!! :)))

Hey @psionic-tremors, thanks a lot for the feedback here! I'm kinda glad you didn't press the stop button here 😂 I tried to keep a lot of the sounds but there was only so much I could keep in as the noise was beginning to hurt my ears 😁

Thank you for listening in! I guess you may not tune in for the judges results if the genre broke your ears? Haha

I'll tune in of course - showing some support for the challenge - even if I do not participate this round - but maybe I'll turn down the volume a bit - have to be careful with my ears ;) 👂

Haha yea, volume down low might be the best policy! It might feel like we have all been in a brawl on the show lol!

Awesome job on this Nicky! This is fun and energetic, and the vocals are a great addition. Really enjoyed this! You sure you don't want to add Hardstyle with the Trance and DnB styles you make?? ;)

Thanks a lot Buf mate! Haha I think those that follow me must be completely confused by what I've been uploading recently! Had to do a serious rebrand last week to put trance in as well as dnb! Not sure I have it in me to carry on with hardstyle though 😂

Dude the groove you accomplished with this one is crazy. Both hypnotic and majorly danceable all at once!

Thanks a lot man! Really appreciate that, just had a listen to yours as well! Sounding pretty awesome too! I saw you use FL - the amount of effects I put on my kick was ridiculous, I actually ran out of effects to use on the volume channel haha! Glad you enjoyed this!

Well that is a fast bpm for me, I prefer 135bpm, I must be getting old lol.
Well done for going out of your musical comfort zone.
Some genres and styles are just beyond us oldies - over 50 - we look back fondly on the old Goa Trance antique style music of the ancient nineties and naughties, when 145bpm was just the absolute max.
And there was some degree of deep consciousness, journey music for the spirited explorer of the realms of trance via drum and dance.
Nothing much like it today, though you do get some good psy prog trance...

Hey @julianhorack! Thanks a lot for stopping by! Well, I did take a dive into trance, psytrance and progressive the last few weeks and made this playlist of 4 tracks that might be a little more up your street.

I won't be doing hardstyle again I don't think but it was fun to try out.

For me, I got involved with trance around 1999-2004 with the ministry of sound vibes so there's a lot of influence in my Drum and bass tracks.

You will probably have some good conversations with @simplymike and @uwelang then as they are into their trance and psy too!

I dread the day that happens, lol. Still a couple more years to go to reach 50. Will be enjoying my 145 BPM until then... at least.

Nice to meet people who know their music, though.

(the 'old Goa Trance antique style music' was a bit too psychedelic for me, However nothing beats things like Sun Project. Even their old work.)
