What are the Best and Most Affordable Android Apps to Learn Languages?

I've been using Duolingo for quite some time now... but I feel like it's taking a really long time to evolve. I'd like to speed up things a little bit.

The main Language I want to learn is Russian so that I can feel more at ease when traveling to Eastern Europe. Over there, one feels quite lost since a large part of the population doesn't speak English at all. Specially the older people who are working at restaurants, supermarkets and shops. The younger population seems to be more fluent in English but those are not the ones you'll interact with, when you need to buy something. 🤔

So, if you want to visit an Eastern European country and not feel like a complete moron, feeling lost all the time, I suggest you learn a little bit of Russian.

This weekend I downloaded a few more Apps to try but I'd like to know your opinion. From the following Apps which ones do you think are the best? (Let me know in the comments if you know anything better and not very costly, of course.)

  • Busuu

  • Duolingo

  • HelloTalk

  • Memrise

  • Other - Which one(s)?

  • Duolingo

I have tried Duolingo a few times. I also heard about Busuu, but I have not tried it so far.
I currently do not know any other language learning app for Android, nor for anything else.

I do not know what you mean by Eastern.Europe but many countries in what I call Eastern Europe do not speak Russian at all.or refuse to speak it..

I mean Lithuania, Latvia, Republica Moldova and, of course, Russia.

Lithuania, Latvia, and especially Estonia... dont fool yourself - its a former soviet respublic, yes, but if you start communicating in Russian on the streets... probably you will just arise a bit of the hostile attitude to you. at least I heard so! Moldova... Belorus... well, maybe. but I really see no point. hehe. sorry :P

Maybe so... but when English doesn't work, at least I'll have another option because let's face it, it's much more probable they'll answer to Russian than to Portuguese! 😂

@trincowski East Europe starts with us with Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, etc

I've only visited Hungary from those 3... and just for a couple of days. It wasn't enough to get a sense of how things work over there.

@trincowski I understand. You will not make yourself popular if you speak Russian. Better learn Hungarian.

Hungarian, ah!!! And where in the world besides Hungary will I ever use that? 🤭

@trincowski Why using Russian if a country where people hate the language and will not speak it with you? In each East European country you find people who speak English or German.

Every language is hard in its own way. I think German is a lot harder than Russian, for example.

Here, enjoy this cold cup of !DERANGED !BEER 🍻

Yeah, Duolingo might not be the best option for Chinese but it can't hurt to try.

I hear you! Duolingo if ok but it could be better 😁. I am on and off on it learning Spanish and when I don't feel like using app I sing along some Spanish songs. Just an idea, hopefully you'll like it. Some of the Russian videos will give you hard time to focus on the lyrics 😂, but you probably already know this.

Yes, but there are two Russian bands that I love so I listen to them a lot, even though I hardly understand what they are saying.

did I miss smth? I'm curious what are the names?
(and I do agree - this is a good motive to learn language! myself, I greatly improved my English being urged to study the lyrics and interviews of such a great rock band as Radiohead. but it was a long ago..)

Do you know Лусинэ Геворкян? She was the vocalist of Tracktor Bowling... and current vocalist of the band Louna.

Tracktor Bowling - Смерти нет

Louna - Огня

I'm actually somewhere amongst that huge crowd, near the stage, on the second video. 😎

Unfortunately, I have not yet a language course. If I went on holiday where, I would get a Language Guide in the library. At home I always translate either with Google Translator or Deepl.translator

Yeah, nowadays a phone with Internet will be enough. But I enjoy knowing English a lot and I'd like to add a third language to my skills.

hmmm! there a few good points here, but... but.... you dont actually need to learn language if its your only purpose! no, not really! you must be hiding something among your intentions :)))
there are not so much older generations folks left at the service / tourist field... especially in big cities (are you plan to visit small towns, travel to the province?..) and even in such case... small guides will surely help you to receive what you want, help to get mutual understanding... no one here will feel offended that you do not speak Russian with him.

in my strong opinion, Russian worth learning if you really feel urge to get acquainted with out classical literature, especially great poetry, or maybe cinema...

ps. sorry I am not a target market and cant you advice directly anything on the subject's certain post :P

have a !BEER, my friend, or !COFFEEA - up to you what to start your morning with!

Well, that was my experience so far. For example, in Lithuania I had a friend who had to go to the hospital and between us both and the medical staff, we spoke around 10 languages - but not a single one in common! We were quite surprised, to say the truth. 😵
