We are mortals. We all die but we also aim for immortality. Many mythological stories tell about gods, devils and people who wished to live for eternity.

Maybe we do not even need to wish this, because according to most of the Near-Death Experiences (NDES), we are already immortals. We existed before we was born on Earth into our physical, human bodies, and we will continue to exist after our physical, human bodies die, because the physical, human bodies are not us. We are not physical beings in our true nature. Being in a physical, human body is just/only a temporary state for us.
There are thousands of NDEs (Near-Death Experiences).
Check the website of NDERF (Near-Death Experience Research Foundation): Current NDEs.
There are literally thousands of NDEs on that website, which proves that this statement is true. Currently (2019.11.16, 16:00 CET) there are 4722 NDEs on that website, and it is constantly/regularly updated.
Some people even have multiple NDEs, and some people even wrote a book (or more) about their NDE(s).

Forever is a lot longer than people think. A lot longer would be ideal, but not forever. That sounds horrible.
