An absolutely excellent article tracing the history and roots of the Silicon Chip and looking at how its created from the most raw materials as well as the incredible global supply chain that puts the chips into your products, wherever they were manufactured.
The complex of the supply chain in this process in mind-boggling with the raw material, to wit the silicon, travelling 2 to 2 times around the world before it ends up in you shiny new smart phone!
The article traces the supply path of the raw materials, in particular the silicon , which comes mainly from a very pure quartz mined in North Carolina, USA, and follows its route and the multitude of different processes it undergoes in its journey.
This truly is globalisation with multi national cooperation and unbreakable ties.
One of 8 articles in the BBC's 'From the Earth' series, this is probably the best thing I've read all week.
