Jonathan Rea has further strengthened his position at the top of the World Superbike standings after winning the first race of the weekend in Portimao. The Ballyclare rider is now closing in on a 100 point lead over rival Alvaro Bautista, who could only come in fourth after dropping as low as 12th in a strange start in Portrugal. That left Rea to come in 3.891 seconds ahead of old foe Chaz Davies, Michael van der Mark completing the rostrum.

It's Rea's eight win on an Algarve circuit that he has always enjoyed. Back in April, Bautista was over 50 points clear of Rea after dominating the season's first four meetings. Since then, Rea has found his form and stormed ahead. He will look to continue his form tomorrow in the sprint race and the second Superbike outing as he strives to win his fifth world title in succession.
