What You Need To Know About Dark Data

(Edited)

Before the advent of computer file storage, large companies such as insurance companies and banks used to maintain warehouses to archive old files for several years before destroying the files. Typically the files were kept for about 6 to 10 years. The period they archive the files depends on, among others, the time bar for legal actions, which varies depending on the type of litigation - contractual breach, tort, land matters and so on.

Although maintaining warehouses for archiving is not necessary any longer, the need to archive files for certain number of years still remains.

Dark data also need to be archived for it may contain information that is crucial for evidence in a lawsuit that may be initiated anytime within the time bar for legal action.

Tom Taulli, contributor to Forbes, also discusses other reasons for archiving dark data including its use for deriving insights for managers.
