More numbers on improved distribution
The other day I made an attempt at finding out if the distribution of vesting shares awarded to authors had improved. This post is a little more on that based on feedback received.
You've cherry picked 4-5 dates that may be the same weekday or may not be the same weekday. If you're comparing Monday vs Saturday vs Wednesday, you're going to see somewhat / drastically different results.
You also picked USA's Halloween, which is a terrible choice. Postings on that date historically are lower than other days that fall on the same day of week.
I appreciate the effort, however, you're not providing enough clarity and consistency.
And so I decided to widen the scope of two data sets to cover the whole of January 2019 and 2020.
A year on, the top 10 authors are sharing 25% fewer vests than they were in Jan 2019. Removing @burnpost and the vested rewarded from the numbers means the top 10 authors in Jan 2020 are sharing just over 50% fewer vests than they were a year prior.

Only steemcleaners and gooddream make both lists, and I'm pretty glad that there aren't more. Most of the original list were using bid-bots heavily, or receiving an almost exclusive whale vote.
I think the main concern from the data is the amount of accounts receiving vesting rewards in Jan 2020 compared with Jan 2019.
Almost 50% fewer accounts earned author rewards last month compared to a year ago. The hope is that some accounts are relying on curation or the likes of steemmonsters and S-E tokens, and that the numbers will pick up again if/when the price of STEEM rises further.
Speaking of which, it's been a good month hasn't it? As much as I should probably be diversifying, I cant help buying STEEM and I think yesterday was my 7 or 8th purchase in the past couple of months. I want my 50k badge!

These numbers are really interesting. I am not concerned with the dropoff of earning accounts so much as I think those who are here now are likely the core that was always needed earlier. The next bullrun is going to be intersting to be a part of on Steem.

I wonder when all that Inc stake starts to become active - and who will control it when it does.
I guess as the pool is worth more, more accounts can share and feel like they are getting somewhere.

And yeah, if the rumors are true and there is stake for sale in chunks, could be very interesting.
I am glad @ned did it, shows that even he fears losing control of stake. I don't think I would be able to move that amount in one transfer anyway.

Nice to see some others getting a piece of the cookie, even i've been getting more crumbs than usual. We're almost at 0.25 cents and it looks like the peg will be back soon! I want to hit 10k soon before these prices get out of my reach

if I didnt have a family to support 1500 euros wouldnt be a bother. im already 7.5k in, sure bring it up to a round 10K would be nice, then i would be ahead of ya, but thats not going to happen any time soon and when I do have the spare cash, steem will be at $10

Vest are only earned when someone is voting other than the earned interest on powered up steem correct? So along with showing an almost 50% drop in users, does not the drop in vest indicate a drop in the number of votes being given out?
Yeah, vests in this analysis are the rewards from vested sp votes.
The reduction in vests is partly down to the 75/25 50/50, but as we are looking at %'s here then that's not an issue in the numbers above.
I forgot about the reduction in the author % from 75 to 50 and then a further reduction of 10% for the SPS system, so the lower rates make more sense to me now. Dec verse Dec at the end of the year, assuming no more percentage changes.

I'm sure there are lots of additional ways to data mine this; the halving of the "last third" is... disturbing? Does it mean more posts are "worth dust"* or does it mean that the change from 75/25 to 50/50 put that many below the dust threshold? Or does it simply mean that a lot fewer little guys were posting in 2020 vs. 2019? Is the deeper implication that it has become that much harder for someone to create an account and hope to be rewarded anything as an author?
I ask this as "barely a minnow," and based on my profile on the Steemit Beta site, I'm ranked number 9,093 in terms of SP.

I think this says a lot. There just aren't that many people kicking around with SP/creating content. Things look like they are about to change though :)
I'm hopeful you're right.
Not only because the price of Steem is rising, but because SCOT tribes and hives might create enough interest-based niches that people will want to add something inside these micro-environments where they can be seen by like-kind souls.

There are other rumors it is Mr. Justin Sun, but I guess he is a token creator, too.
Distribution is just one side of the coin. For me is more important what people do with distributed coins. In a couple of years, fewer people will hold more steem. Like with fiat. We're the same species.

Yeah I agree. Just need to make sure we are the people holding. I’m both happy to see more posting but not too keen to support those returning who sold out completely - some of the new wave will probably have stronger hands.

Yea I think we definitely made the most of the low prices last year when it was floating around 9-13p, my average cost was 10.8p per steem for the 24k I bought and the other 6k has either been from author rewards or exchanging on steem engine, dlease, curation rewards or contest winnings! If I factor those in, my cost becomes 8.5p per steem which is not too bad going!
Now with steem up at 20p at time of writing, it's sparked some more feel good vibes!
If I didn't need to save to pay a couple grand for a new car this month then I'd have gone for a bit more but I'm happy with 30k, was always my first target.
