Nama Kota Banda Aceh yang berasal dari nama Bandar Aceh Darussalam, pernah lama tak dipakai, setelah diubah oleh Pemerintah Kolonial Belanda menjadi Kutaraja. Tapi pasca kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia dikebalikan lagi ke nama asalnya; Banda Aceh. Sejarwan Aceh yang juga pelaku perjuangan kemerdekaan di Aceh, Teuku Alibasjah Talsya dalam makalahnya Banda Aceh Pada Masa Kemerdekaan yang disampaikan pada Seminar Hari Ulang Tahun (HUT) Banda Aceh tahun 1988 mengungkapkan, suasana hening meliputi siding penutupan Musyawarah Kerukunan Rakyat Aceh di Banda Aceh pada tanggal 21 Desember 1962, tiba-tiba menjadi gemuruh karena tepukan tangan para hadirin.
