Dreadful it is called, that's the initially name for the hairdo which is naturally breed in JAMAICA called Dread or Dreadlock.

It is more of mark or a notable point anytime Jamaica is mentioned. Linked with the the Nazarite bow in Leviticus 21:5

“They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard nor make any cuttings in their flesh”).

They also claim tie to Samson as the hair is the source of power and inspiration. This tie was used to make them behave well and make them law abiding as they are threatening that their hair would be cut if they break the law.

The history is traced to Africa kept by early warriors in a tribe in Kenya.

In Jamaica, the Rastafarian keep the kind of hair. Rastafarian are people who are peaceful, loving, kind and shun any illegal stuff.

Tho in modern world, its more like a fashion trend, its not tied to anything in other part of the world. Celebrities now train or keep the hair as a mark of stardom and wealthy lifestyle.

In some part of the world, the dread is attached to people who are not train properly or people who are nuisance.

Dread has even become a trend and more of a must do for reggae musician. The likes of Bob Marley, Lucky Dube, Majek fashek and the list goes on and on keep dread as they see it as a culture link to Jamaica root with also they are seen as people who are liberator and see music as a tool.

@sammiegold, That's true, many people believe that Hair is source of power and that's why Ancient people followed this and they were in more higher position than we are in regards to Knowledge Of Source.
