Extracting my BLURT, the easy way

(Edited)

It may have passed may people by, but another fork of Steem happened a few months back to create Blurt (note that their blurt.world site seems to be down).

Blurt

It appears to be running a variation of the old Steemit site software with a couple of significant changes:

  • No downvotes. That will please many people, but it does mean there is no way to reduce rewards in cases of abuse.
  • Fees for most transactions. This is probably intended to keep spam under control given that there are no downvotes. It costs a few thousandths of a BLURT to post, comment, follow and transfer.
  • There is no 50/50 payout options. It is just Power up 100% or Decline Payout.

Anyone with a Steem account before the fork should have had an airdrop of BLURT matching their STEEM, but with a current price of around 0.7c it will be worth a lot less.

I see a few people I know posting there. Some duplicate what they post on Hive, but others are churning out posts (shit/junk?) to earn something, possibly with self-votes. Trending posts are making less than $10. I have done a few posts there to test the water.

Like many others I have been powering down my BLURT (13 weeks) as I have no use for the platform. For the extra work it creates it is not worth my time and I suspect it is not going to take off. I would rather invest in Hive. The @ionomy exchange has BLURT/BTC and BTC/HIVE pairs, so I had been using that to sell what I had.

Ionomy

However, I only just found out that there is a Blurtlink account that lets you get BLURT onto Hive Engine in seconds. I was able to quickly sell some.

Hive Engine

I may spend some of this on some Rising Star card packs. I am powering up all my HIVE in my quest to become an orca, but this extra income is a bonus and I do not mind spending it on games.

Of course, if you think Blurt has a bright future then it is a great time to buy lots of their tokens. What do you think?

I'm worth $7.04 Blurt \o/
Although it seems a bit flaky to me. Won't let me powerup.

I think there is a fee for powering up, so you cannot shift it all.

You can not power up all of it because then you have no liquid blurt to pay the fee to power up. Also if you do not have any liquid blurt you need to buy some in order to power down.

Yeah, I powered up 44 odd.

I haven't powered down because I don't fully trust the front end not to steal my keys. Is there are command line interface somewhere?

I think it is possible to do things via scripts if you direct them to the appropriate nodes.

change your keys here and on steem FIRST, keep your old ones and power down on blurt with them.

The $0.0068 price is just shameful considering the first group was able to dump their blurt for $0.10 cent a pop.

I got a better price on some, but then it fell. Seems fairly stable now. This is bonus money, so I will take what I can get.

Did you get a better price on Hive-engine than Ionomy? I have been going the Ionomy way because I did not know of this method.

I think the rate worked out about the same. There's a 1% charge for the transfer to Hive Engine, then it's a matter of what people are paying. For these small amounts it's no big deal.

As per their site, 1 BLURT = $0.01, so has that increased to 0.7 ? I see, I have got some, so I will start the power down.

They round it up I think. Previously it showed $0.03 a while back.

Yeah, I wasn’t going to be bothered trying to milk, so I set everything to power down and have been using Ionomy. Thanks for the blurtlink link!!!! That might save some fees, thinking I might give it a shot on the next one.

Happy to help. I am just surprised I did not find out about this sooner. There must be some people with a lot of money in there. It ought to be working for them.

Like you said the site was down but I was able to access it via the blur.blog url. I am in the process of selling my first batch on Hive-Engine right now.

Heard of the fork but I'm yet to visit the site. I'll equally power down and sell.

I don't think I have the time to equally blog there

Maybe they can get some part of the market, but there are so many options now.

Options like?

I mean for social media. Obviously I favour Hive, but there are competitors. Somehow Steem keeps going.

Nice post on our (those owning BLURT ...) options @steevc. Amongst the "band of brothers" in the Man Cave, we have a number of them engaged there, including as Witnesses.

Once the 13-week powerdown period is past (from their July 4th start-up), I guess we'll see what the market price settles out at!

It's all just a big experiment. Even Hive could go either way as it is still small.

Hadn't seen the Man Cave community. I am sitting in my MC right now :)

Their implementation of fees is soooo bad. There's no way to know how much fee was paid later on in the future. When you are taking funds from a user's wallet, you'd want that record to be stored somewhere, but it isn't. I don't tare touch blurt with a 50 ft stick cuz of that. Not even going to power down due to that.

I think they may have changed something as when I first looked I found I could not do certain things, but it was not clear that I needed liquid BLURT. If you have it all powered up then I am not sure you can eve start a power down. I had to send some to a friend so they could. You have little to lose from powering down and selling.

With multiple forks of our blockchains, content, and wallets, it seems there are more and more copies of our wallets out there, with various tokens (STEEM/HIVE/BLURT and other associated tokens like LEO). The incentive is there for people to give these new chains their private keys to extract some value from their wallets.

But could it be possible for someone to fork the chain in this way, and then harvest private keys input by users hoping to cash in on the tokens? I'm not claiming BLURT's people are doing that. But I'm asking if that's something which could be done.

I'm already hesitant to provide 3rd parties with my keys. These fly-by-night chains don't inspire confidence.

There is some risk of this, but you can and should update your Hive keys so that they cannot exploit your account. I think the Blurt people are sincere, but I would not trust Steemit an inch.

Okay, well I guess I will have to think on it.

Lately I am feeling quite disillusioned with cryptos in general. I am still bullish for price, but I'm not an investor, I'm a content creator. I was hoping to find a way to monetize my content creation but these blockchains have disappointed. I put in 3 years, full time, with a starting investment of $5000, and my current net total is under $1500. It seems that these tokens are designed to continuously lose value. I wish I had known that before I put my entire crypt stack into STEEM 3 years ago.

As time has gone by, crypto in general has become less private, and more centralized. At this moment, I am unable to use crypto with any degree of privacy or decentralization. Everything requires a smart device, which I will never touch, and/or government ID, bank account, etc. Crypto was supposed to provide privacy and decentralization but there is literally no way to use it that way. I'm open to suggestions but I have blogged about it for over a year and nobody has been able to come up with anything.

Recently, steem-engine started requiring "Keychain", which I also will not use, and now my funds there are unavailable to me. I can log in and see them, but that's it without "Keychain".

Hive-engine still works, but not without issues. I recently tried withdrawing 0.00001 BTC as a test run, to my private wallet. The transaction went through, but nothing arrived. I don't think I did anything wrong, but if I did, that means crypto is apparently too complicated for me to handle. Most likely I entered everything properly, but something went wrong with hive-engine. So I can't pull funds out through there into BTC, which is a bit more liquid. Everything I have is pretty much locked where it is. What kind of currency can't be spent or transferred, but can only be bought or earned, and saved? That's not even really a currency by definition.

I feel as though more and more pathways are closing up. The crypto world is not free, in any sense of the word. It sucks, because I've promoted crypto since 2011, before almost anyone here had even heard of it. But now I find myself wishing I had never touched it.

I also wish I could get out, but I can't. The best I can hope for is finding somebody who will trade me some USD or CAD via PayPal, or maybe buying something online with my Bitcoin and having it delivered. Not exactly liquid currency, if you can barely spend it, it costs you to spend it, and you can't get what you actually need/want with it. But I'll be happy to extract any value from my STEEM, HIVE, LEO and other tokens, BTC, and ten bucks here and there - like Cardano, to test it out. It's all wasted money and wasted time. It's just a big permanent record of my activities, stored for all time and immutable, but providing me no benefit. I have a big folder in my safe with dozens of crypto keys, blockchain keys, 3rd party service passwords, and so on. All a waste of time, and a security hazard on top of it.

I've yet to eat a single calorie obtained through my $5000 investment and 3 years of full time work here. Not one bite of food, not one dollar of rent, not one bill has been paid. It's just video game tokens to me, at this point, the lot of it.

Anyone want to buy a scattered, HIVE-centric, depreciated crypto portfolio? Will accept fiat cash, food, bullion, or other real things.

It's a fairly simple game with a fun theme. I have got into collecting the cards, but some are pretty expensive. It is interesting to see how it all develops and to have a say in things. There is still potential to get a nice extra income from the game, but it is being tweaked to reduce the ability of people to exploit it too much.
