This time last week the race for the wooden spoon was looking a foregone conclusion but a dramatic turnaround in the Renegades form has at the very least given the reigning champions a shot at avoiding 8th place. In their place would be today's opponents the Hobart Hurricanes who are without a win in their last 5 outings and are themselves just 3 points ahead of the Renegades.

The way the Bash has been going over the past couple of seasons shows just how small the margins are in elite sport. Last season the Renegades won the title after the Hurricanes topped the league table. In that season the 2 bottom sides were the Scorchers and the Strikers who had dominated the season before. What chances of the Melbourne Stars crashing and burning in the 2020/21 season?

Both teams at the very least put on a decent comeback in their previous outings although the Renegades were helped in no small part by some farcical batting from the Brisbane Heat in a win that evoked memories of last year's final. In general, though the Renegades batting looks a little more balanced than at the start of the tournament with more batsmen being deployed in their prefered positions and greater hitting power lower down the order. The Hurricanes too showed that they have some brute force in their line-up as David Miller finally came to the party. Ultimately he had been left with too much to do by his top order and in general, his form is a case of too little, too late for the Hobart based side.
