Hong Kong on a Lazy, Hazy, Day

A few years ago now, I often used to visit Hong Kong. Often book-ending a longer adventure with a few days both at the beginning and at the end of the trip.

Whilst there, I dreamed of getting that perfect shot with a clear sky, but it wasn't to be! The clear skies in Hong Kong usually follow a day or so after some prolonged torrential rain. The worst rain I ever experienced there was the first time I ever arrived. The streets were awash, I was a little overawed by the city and I didn't venture out much for a day until I acclimatised. I was leaving a couple of days later and never got my shot, but had already fallen in love with incredible sights, smells and sounds, and most of all, Tsim Tsa Tsui and the harbour area. It wasn't how I had wanted it to be, I'd have needed to go back 40 years for that, but it was magical nevertheless.

I was searching through some old files the other day and found these photos. I think they were all taken from Victoria Peak as the sun slowly began to fade. Obviously, it was hazy but upon re-examining them almost 11 years since they were taken, I really rather like the shades and the wash of haze. Makes them appear almost painted.

With Hong Kong in the news so much for all the wrong (and right!) reasons at the moment, I keep getting a hankering to retrace old steps. Not sure this is just age and me reminiscing or even whether it's a good or bad sign, but I did create some amazing memories there.

The few times I've been it's difficult to tell if it's dawn, dusk or what. The haze is seemingly an ever present reality. We're cloaked in a haze here currently from Indonesian wild fires or open burning one never knows. I've had an impossible to fully kick head cold I attribute to the dense stagnant smoky air. Not California wild fire bad but shite nonetheless. There's no escaping until mid September they say. Have a good night and FYI I'm on esteem 🤓

Doing HK before you go onto the mainland is a really awesome way to get a feel and acclimatise. Its a real east meets west buffer zone
