If anything the figure seemed to have become more solid. It was now permanently stuck on the image of the boy - although it spoke in the voice of the old man.
"You need to help us," it said.
"I need to no such thing," Faver said. "I need you to leave me alone. Get out of my bedroom. I want to go to sleep. I've had a very hard day."
The boy took a step towards Faver, and waved the teddy bear in his face.
"You have no time for sleeping! Do you think you will be allowed to stay in this house with your Reputation score? Come on! You work for the System! You know what they will do."
Faver opened his mouth to respond. And then closed it again. The boy was right. Any moment now the Guardians would be arriving to evict him and move in someone with a better Reputation. He was a nobody. He blinked.
"I'm hungry. Let's go down to the kitchen. I think I have some blueberries in the fridge. They are a superfood don't you know."
The boy shrugged. "I think that is just nonsense made up by blueberry farmers," he said. "But they taste nice, so lead the way, old chap."
