At Times Like This We Need to Unite Not Divide

avatar

We're really in uncertain times at the moment. I don't do well with change, but know that it is a part of life and generally can work through things as they come. However, recently I've been feeling steamrolled by a continual stream of change after change and struggling to find one constant to cling onto, a life preserver in these building rapids. Yet I think I may have finally found it in the hands that have reached out to me from the communities around me in a display of what we truly need right now, coming together!

Recently my friend, @ligayagardener, posted this on his Facebook page:

Y2iXpRRkNSnseh3NuL6KUBitJTXrc5JyceJaEpYGzZrdk.jpeg

One of the commenters underneath stated the belief that this was the best thing he'd posted and I had to agree with the sentiment. We are currently facing a worldwide crisis which hasn't been seen on this level for generations, the outcome of which is unknown at this point. Yet, as @artemislives highlighted so well, instead of coming together, some seem incapable or unwilling to put themselves in the shoes of others to appreciate their situation, choosing instead to abuse them. I don't like swearing at the best of times and #StayTheFuckHome certainly does seem to be an overused tag of late. I'm also not keen on the way doing a privilege check seems to be used by many as an attack, but there is an appropriate use for it currently, when we seem to forget that even in 1st world countries, not everyone has a home to stay in.

Technologically, Australia is rather behind compared to other first world countries and at times even second world countries. So when the none essential businesses were ordered to close and the welfare waiting period waivered, they actually thought the website was under a DDos attack when people piled in to sign on, crashing the system. The phone lines didn't cope much better and crowds of people descended on undermanned Centrelink offices, creating the very crowding the government was trying to stop in the first place. Should the have stayed at home, with no money to pay rent, mortgage or bills?

Children on their way to school are having abuse hurled at them for not staying home, because the parents who are in necessary work still need to go to work and may not be able to keep their children home.

People at the supermarkets are getting filthy looks and shamed if they load their trolley up high, but they could be an isolated farmer who lives so far away from everywhere that they can only make that big trip once a month to stock up until they can come out again. Or maybe they are someone with a big family, then the supermarket limits their purchases to two cans each. How far is that going to get them? Farmers are making trips around every supermarket in every town, just to try and get enough to last them a week.

We're not going to know for months yet, just what the outcomes will be to the Covid19 pandemic, but the chances are that the shockwaves will be felt for a long time after. Those who don't believe the virus is any worse than the seasonal flu, could be proven wrong and see loved ones lost to it. On the other hand, they could be perfectly right in blaming overreaction for the economic collapse which is now in full implosion and could end up with lives lost due to hunger. Either way, someone will be able to say “I told you so.” Does it really matter at this point who will get to say that?

Almost everyone is fearing the future. Divided, it doesn't matter who's right or wrong or whose fault it is, we won't get very far moving forward. United, we can help each other to try and get through this. When the virus abates, we're going to need each other more than ever.

Our economy was already collapsing, now it's just going implode. Will our governments blame it on the pandemic? You betcha! Moving forward is going to be harder than ever for small businesses and local businesses, but we can already begin to look at how we can start to help shift to a new paradigm, rather than attacking those we currently think are doing the wrong thing or believe the wrong thing.

Recently a friend invited me to a Facebook group, Australian made products. Like many countries we've outsourced a lot of our production and with borders closed we're going to start noticing it. Ironically, Australia is a country which spans a variety of climates and should, in theory, be able to self sustain food wise. Yet we don't. Matters won't be helped by the bushfires we had this spring and summer. We will need each other in the coming months and years. So even if you disagree with someone, just stop and think a moment where they might be coming from. The chances are they are just as fearful as you and I.

I wonder how many times this has happened in the past, but we didn't have the capacity to test for it. How many new viruses have come, wreaked havoc, then gone away, and just been blamed on the regular flu?
Like an asteroid that might destroy the planet; if it's going to miss, I'd probably rather it not even be discovered.

That's a good question. After all, swine flu didn't end up being as bad as they thought, despite the fears it would be a repeat of the 1918 flu. It's been about 100 years since that, so maybe this is something we face every 100 years, assuming it ends up as bad.

It will feel worse because the media is beginning to perfect the circle of shame and guilt that can be imposed on those who are not complicit in the outcomes and circumstances we face today.

So many people are performing way beyond negligence in response to this "crisis" - and the way in which the academic level discourse about this is so far ahead of the media narrative is absolutely baffling.

The YouTube channel "VoiceofThunder" (also "Thunderfoot") has a clever bloke talking about modelling, statistics, and logic as applied to this on a global scale.

Hopefully the one thing we gain from these events is a far larger proportion of our populace applying critical thinking skills.

The biggest loss is the fact that people simply aren't doing any of this at the moment.

After reading some of the responses to Matt's last post, I fear that critical thinking skills aren't something easily developed for some.

Hard times on the horizon for sure. We got too big. We have exceeded our carrying capacity on this earth and it’s only a matter of time. We must stick together and return to a code of honor to help the sick and weak and ensure there is a world left for our children to grow up in.

"We have exceeded our carrying capacity on this earth..."

No, not even close. We have left developing our infrastructure to Robber Barons whose only concern was their control and profit from that development and infrastructure, and that has caused it to utterly neglect far more profitable methods to all concerned instead of aggrandizement of banksters and overlords alone.

Today decentralized means of production continue developing that improve the interactions of society and our environment by orders of magnitude instead of causing massive offshoring of pollution and environmental degradation, and our overlords, unable to profit from these technologies, do everything in their power to prevent us from grasping them and increasing our relative economic power and benefits to the ecosystems we depend on for our lives.

Either grasp these independent means of benefiting you and yours as well as the environment we live in now, or become ever more dependent on vile predators during the destruction of the economy and infrastructure heretofore dependable.

I do not recommend that latter dependence. Sheep depending on wolves for their lives does not seem to me to be an analogy for my life I want to apply.

So I take it you don’t subscribe to the 50/500 rule?

And unfortunately Fukushima has sealed the fate of our environment. You can be the biggest wolf in The Valley, but when the forest fire comes it’s not going to matter if you’re a wolf or a sheep is it?

I hadn't come across the 50/500 rule before. I see it refers to genetic diversity, which is interesting because my daughter was recently discussing that with me. Something about humans having a good range of genetic diversity compared to many other species, perhaps due to our ranging.

Some scientist argue against it that technology emits us from ecological rules but I believe there is some merit to the idea of genetic drift. Once a population becomes too large it is subject to drift. Similar to mono crops.

Edit: maybe we also luck out with so many hominoid ancestors as well. But with each generation the genetic code becomes more identical (losing diversity) and thus more susceptible to degradation.

Wouldn't the fact that we are breeding more across different cultures increase genetic diversity? We have very few places where inbreeding occurs now. I got the impression that 50/500 was a minimum, so rather than it getting worse as the population grows would it not get better at avoiding genetic drift.

"...suggests a minimum population size of 50 was necessary to combat inbreeding and a minimum of 500 individuals was needed to reduce genetic drift."

Ahhh! I think your right. I must have been confusing something else. Haven’t taken ecology or biology in a decade or so🤣 thanks. Makes sense. There is something to do with large populations inability to adapt. Gonna have to look into it.

As a biologist I absolute do subscribe to the balance of predators and prey. However, I note the fact that aquaponics completely divorces that from acreage, inhuman corporations, and government.

As humans that have constructed fire proof residences wherein they supply their own goods and services in the valley where the fire sweeps through, what has that to do with them?

Leaving megacorporations in charge of agriculture is the creation of a death cult.

Good to "see" you @minismallholding. Well written response to what is currently going on globally, I hope you and yours (as this post gives no indication ...) are safe and well.

"These are the times that try men's souls" is a quote that has come to my mind more than once over the last 2-3 weeks. Times like these reveal man's character. And we'll see both the best of it. And the worst ...

Physically we are well. There are probably slight cracks appearing in our mental wellbeing, however. My youngest, the introvert, is probably coping the best. Not much has changed for her, except for the opportunity to socialise even less than usual! 🤣 Australia is not locked down like many other countries at the moment, so we aren't too restricted by regulating, but most people are staying hone as much as possible. I went out today for a few bits and was amazed at how empty the carparks were.

This is very interesting to me @minismallholding ...

"Australia is not locked down like many other countries at the moment ..."

... as I am not personally supportive of "locking down" America. The notion the Almighty State can shut down an entire country for weeks, supply the needs of 360 million people while they are sitting at home doing nothing, then "magically" start it all back up again strikes this man as insanity ...

Or is it something worse? I can find no example of any previous time in history, even during prior times of suffering (to varying degrees of intensity, up to and including death ...), where this was ever attempted. Why now? And to what end?

For me, we do not say this out of fear or any concern for ourselves. But, for our children and grandchildren. The consequences are already unfolding. And we're just getting started ...

In the midst of whatever is coming, I hope you and yours get through it comparatively okay, my friend. Nice to hear you are physically well. I certainly understand the mental well being part. Likely you will find ways to cope with it, as we all typically figure out our way through the difficulties as best we can, when given no alternative.

Of course they won't be able to start it back up again as if nothing happened, but they'll have something to blame the ensuing collapse on. We're certainly going to have interesting times ahead of us.

More than most, your circumstances present you opportunities to prosper growing forward. Please continue to share your expertise in those productive capabilities that will enable you to feed your family, maintain your home and production facilities, and maintain clear lines of communication uncensored.

As the world continues to reward all those initiatives you have already undertaken more and more, those capable of grasping they themselves need to provide what they and their loved ones need to survive and thrive will increasingly need that information and wealth of experience.

Thanks!

Thank you for the vote of confidence. I have to admit I've been feeling a bit defeated of late on some of these aspects. If our water gets cut off, there is a limit to what I can do in the garden in this crazy climate and this current crisis has made me feel like my time is running out to try and figure it out. Ah well, chin up and keep plugging away.

I'm still mostly exasperated (not angry or scared) and sarcastic (that doesn't seem to go away no matter what x_x), what does that make me? XD

I think sometimes people live for the "I told you so" hence the desperate attempts to make their version of reality the true one -_-

And I think everyone could definitely stand to be nicer to each other.

Hey at least you're better than me, I devil's advocate absolutely everyone on anything they seem a bit too "passionate" (ie single-minded) about regardless of which viewpoint I actually take x_x

Well not so much these days as I've been actively avoiding it XD

He said, 'Stop doing wrong things and turn back to God! The kingdom of heaven is almost here.'(Matthew 3:2)

Question from the Bible, Why would God pick a Filipino to be His messenger?
