7 free things to do at home during a lockdown

avatar

Pretty much everyone is under some form of lockdown now and is likely to be bored stiff at home. The other day I went to get 4 books out from the library in case they shut down soon. When I got home, I sprayed them with 70% alcohol and left them on the window sill for a whole day. Not sure if that will kill off the virus, but at least it makes me feel better 🙃

Apart from reading, I thought it would be good to share some ideas on things that you can do at home for free. Hopefully it will help to relief some boredom.

Spice up your sex life

Spending 24 x 7 with your partner make take the toll on the relationship even if you're deeply in love with one another. Luckily (or maybe not so lucky) if you're in Italy and need something to spice up your sex live, PornHub is offering free premium subscriptions. This offer last till 3rd April. Perhaps VPN might work if you're not in Italy...

Learn a new language

Remember that foreign language you always wanted to learn but kept on putting off? Why not do it now? Rosetta Stone are offering free language courses for 3 months. There's 24 languages to choose from, well strictly speaking 22 because you can learn British English vs American English, and Spanish (Spain) vs Spanish (Latin America). The courses normally cost around £50 so this is quite a good deal.

Excercise

When you're stuck indoors all the time it's important to stay healthy and burn off the excess energy. Ideally it would be good to have a proper excercise routine. My excercise routine is the toothbrush squats. Just think, every day you brush your teeth twice for two minutes each time, and if you floss your teeth at night time that's add about another minute. That's 5 minutes a day x 7 days = 35 minutes excercise a week using idle time.

Play table tennis

Ok, I'm aware not everyone may have enough space at home, but if you do, you can get a portable table tennis set and use your dining table to play table tennis. This is what my brother has done. If you can't get your hands on a table tennis set, you can always improvise with a piece of string for the net, and scrunge a newpaper into a ball. Job done and have some fun!

Learn to cook with professional chefs

The biggest issue being in lockdown is what to cook with limited resources. Starting 23 March, Jamie Oliver has a new cooking show called Jamie: Keep Cooking and Carry On. It will include "some easy-to-follow recipes, tips and hacks, specifically tailored for the unique times we’re living in with so many people staying at home." The program will be shown on Channel 4 in UK, VPN may come in handy again...

Another cook that is teaching people to cook in these difficult times is Massimo Bottura, the Michelin-starred chef from the world renowed Osteria Francescana restaurant in Modena, Italy. His show is called Kitchen Quarantine and will take viewers step by step through basic recipes. You can find his live show on his Instagram page.

Video conference with friends and family

With all the lockdown and social distance, it is practically impossible to see friends and family. The best alternative is to catch up virtually. One video conferencing app that's become very popular recently is Zoom. I've been using it to catch up with all my siblings. The video quality is really good, and so far the most we've had on a call is 6 people with no jittering at all. I like this a lot better than whatsapp as I can't do Whatsapp video from my PC, and Skype can't have so many people on the same call.

Rosetta Stone is the last way I’d learn a language but yeah language learning is a great way to spend the time.

I was I was on lockdown now, rather than being lied to about the how widespread it probably is in Tokyo. I’d finish this damn book! And maybe learn Spanish

Duolingo, a grammar book, and habit of making sentences to practice grammar will go further for a fraction of the price :-)

@adetorrent great opportunity for you

Great write up especially that 👆 didn't see it coming lol I came up with some today myself. It's fun to write something not travel related once in a while really. Open up some creativity :D

I have already started to write the contest post... Tomorrow the post of my date with Mr piña coming.

Stay safe and don't be too bored. I'm wondering how many children will be born in 9+ months like, seriously #lol

It's getting a bit difficult to find stuff to write when you're locked indoors, hopefully the writing contest will help.

Maybe we will see a covid-19 boom, who knows!!!

Vietnam just cancelled most flights that are even going through Taiwan. I don't remember exactly whether or not you actually live there. Maybe Vietnam is just cutting out everyone, i don't know.

I had a go at Rosetta Stone Vietnamese and after the first chapter I was like "eff that"

I was, but left a month ago, am back home in UK now for the time being. Taiwan have stopped all transits and no foreigners are allowed in now. Proper lockdown.

Are you going to be impacted in Vietnam? How long do you have there? Hopefully it will be much easier to extend your visa.

Maybe the Italians are more passionate people 😅
How are things with you? I heard Romania is in lockdown as well?

Maybe, hahaha.

Yeah, is in lockdown as well. We registered 143 new cases yesterday and we are not allowed to leave our houses anymore. Only pharmacies and markets for food are being left open and we are not allowed to go to them too often, maybe once every week or 2 weeks. It's pretty insane and a hard period but I hope everything will end soon..

There's only so much of that we can do, we will run out of upvotes very quick, or maybe run out of posts to comment and upvote. It seems a bit quite

Yes, I'm finding migrating my SQL and python scripts to be a project in itself.
Than again, something to keep me busy and sane while I'm out of a job.

Honest to God, I can think of MILLIONS of things to do on a lockdown. Somehow, though, when you're told to stay home, all you wanna do is go out. I might order a wood burning kit and play with that. At least online ordering is all good and strong in Britain. @riverflows
