Week 10/15/2019 - Win a Membership in Steem Basic Income - Tell us About a Favorite Freewrite

presents (4).png

Paris-art-clip3.png

@carolkean here on behalf of #freewritehouse with yet another Friday conundrum: I will post the weekly favorites on Thursday as I'll have no internet access Friday. If anyone covets this job, I'll hand it off to you. If not, y'all are stuck with me and my hit-and-miss Friday posts. And now....here are the Freewrite Favorites!

FWH-faves.png

@carolkean

I'm going to get weird this week and excerpt a a photo from one of the nominated posts because I love this picture so much and one of our most active and prolific freewriters shared it with us:

Thank you @ You-Know-Who for the happy memories (and photo!). Parents like yours manifest all that is good and right in the world, and you clearly are carrying on their legacy.

Readers, you'll have to read on to find out which freewrite this is from.

Most of you will recognize the photo of our beloved freewriter.

Tissue Alert: if you listen to this song, you might shed a few tears.

Ok, NOW for the nominees...

@zeldacroft

totally made my day with this post:

I love the "good doctor," a big man, jolly and energetic, charging up the steep hillside, the epitome of America's love affair with Walt Whitman. Great explorers!! - one of my favorite subjects - thank you, @zeldacroft. No cameras - just a sketchbook and art supplies to schlepp around in new, uncharted territory, and who has time to draw when (as the doctor points out) ADVENTURE awaits? But thank God the great ones did draw - on the Lewis and Clark expedition, and Karl Bodmer's Illustrations to Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied's expeditions (Brazil, North America).

This story calls to mind a Moody Blues song about legendary explorers, namely, the one who'd been missing for years. I love the classic, coolly British greeting from the man who found him - Not "OMG, it's you," but the quintessential

"Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"

Yes, she tipped us off:

So it was after midnight, and I was watching a [Dr. Livingstone] documentary from the Secrets of the Dead series while writing this. I don’t mean for this to be him, and Jonathan was invented too, but it was inspirational to think back on great explorers. It must have been incredibly exciting and terrifying to head into the unknown.

For those who don't know the story, here it is:

A 19th-century explorer named Dr. David Livingstone became something of a national hero through his articles and lectures about his adventures in Africa. In 1864, Livingstone led an expedition to discover the source of the Nile. When little to nothing was heard from or about Livingstone after many years, Europeans and Americans became concerned. In 1871, the publisher of the New York Herald hired Henry Stanley, a newspaper reporter, to find Livingstone. Heading a group of some two hundred men, Stanley headed into the African interior. After nearly eight months he found Livingstone in a small village on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. As Stanley described the encounter, “As I advanced slowly toward him I noticed he was pale, looked wearied . . . I would have embraced him, only, he being an Englishman, I did not know how he would receive me; so I . . . walked deliberately to him, took off my hat, and said, ‘Dr. Livingstone, I presume?' The phrase “‘Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” caught the public's fancy, and any number of would-be wits greeted friends with it until the phrase lost all traces of cleverness. But that never stopped people from continuing to use it long past the public's memory of who Livingstone or Stanley were.
source: Doctor Livingstone, I presume?

Sorry-Not-Sorry,

I didn't mean to monopolize this post with my personal favorite, but @zeldacroft deserves the extra attention. And upvotes. And I am exploiting my volunteer job instead of just using my degree in teaching high school English to deliver historical tidbits to a captive audience.

FWH-faves.png

@iamraincrystal

I look forward to this activity weekly ^_^ Here are my choices for the week...

@wonderwop

Interesting cat behavior! I didn't know some cats like tea. I better not put out tea drinks for our cats. ^_^ Amusing read!

@mr-neil

Amusing and fun to read. It reminded me of a person I know.. someone who has to be somewhere but never leaves on time! Ha ha! ^_^

@felt.buzz

"unpleasant" a weekend freewrite

Cleverly written with an interesting protagonist who is rather unpleasant. I do wonder what his whole story is. ^_^

FWH-faves.png

@wakeupkitty

Okay, let's recommend a freewrite about bacteria...
My first recommendation is @myjob. She tells us about the fear getting necrotizing fasciitis or.. the flesh-eating bacteria. As a fisherman, it is easy to get injured. Are she and her husband immune for this bacteria? More about her life as a fisherman you can read in her entry.

My second recommendation is @improv.
He is not looking forward to see a giant bacterium it would scare him and made him hide in the basement. He found a way to scare them and also has a tip for you if it comes to 'inviting them for dinner'. More of his thoughts, bad or good you can read in his freewrite.

FWH-faves.png

@felixgarciap

It's always hard to decide, here are my favorites:

First: @wonderwop, in which he shows us a funny scene in the shower, without glasses with an animal perching on him. So you can read it here.

Second: @mgaft1, he shows us a funny scene as an example of what not to do and what the consequences of doing so would be. You can read this here.

Third: @giocondina, she details the daily struggle to protect your child from bacteria. Here is the link.

FWH-faves.png

@fitinfun

I'm going overboard this week with 4 recommendations:
@myjob actually has a pecan tree in her yard and we get photos! And more interesting fishing info as well :)

@wonderwop's dad was trying to get a pecan tree to grow, but instead left good memories.

)

@deemarshall In a short but interesting few sentences, gives me good recipe ideas:

And we have a new freewriter in @medusaeffect who seems to know a lot about keeping bees:

FWH-faves.png

@owasco

@iamraincrystal

has been writing great WeWrites. This week's is no exception.

Somehow they are always first up too. If you want a bit of spooky, don't miss this one. It's short but very swee... OK maybe it's not sweet, but it's a goodie. Go read it! I'm working kind of hard trying to come up with fifty words for this one without giving the story away. That's 50, right? It has to be 50.

@owasco

I've followed this series only spottily, and missed her black, white and red all over submissions entirely, but I still love this series by @deeanndmathews. This entry though, this one, gave me chills. Captain Lee is such a stern and emotionally well-defended man in most of the stories, but in this one we come to know the vulnerable Captain, the captain in love. So beautiful. I keep hoping he and Mrs. Thornton (have I got that name right?) will get together, but he had a true love already once in his lifetime. Does one get to have two?

@deeanndmathews replied to a commenter,

Captain Lee's love lost ... great memories of a great day ...
But look how he gets told to get over love lost and get on with getting the love he needs, SORT OF gently...
https://steemit.com/writing/@deeanndmathews/weekend-freewrite-10-12-19-single-prompt-take-care

And to @owasco, she replied,

Captain Lee's late wife was introduced in chapters 10, 11, and 12 of Black, White, and RED All Over, which came through on Steemit back in July, and some other references to her pop up in September's freewrites. Generally, Captain Lee's grief for her loss is the biggest component of his general gravity beside 23 years of hard Army service... he threw himself into the latter in order to deal with the former.

BUT, let me save you some searching backwards ... go get Black, White, and Red ALL Over over on Amazon, and get your questions answered in addition to seeing how this story all begins... AND, look forward to being tagged on the next big piece, The Posture of Innocence, VERY soon!

@curie also recognized this Freewrite Favorite:

FWH-faves.png

@carolkean

@owasco

shines with her usual wit and irreverence with The Manor House We-Write prompt:

I love the come-uppance (however undeserved!) of the sister who flirts with the cute guy, and I love the ending. @deirdyweirdy summed it up well:

Love the story. It's a good laugh, especially Kelly's irreverent attitude to the hubby and kids. Nicely done!

FWH-faves.png

Two other Manor House #we-writes also won the recognition of @curie!

@darthgexe - The Manor House - We-Write #10

@mgaft1 - We-Write #10: The Manor House

FWH-faves.png

These will be past payout, but they are also worthy entries to the we-write prompt "Manor House":

@sarez

adds his trademark, a surprise twist (he's the master!) to his we-write:

@iamraincrystal

has us begging for a sequel:

As Clara hurried over to her sister, she failed to notice the two shadowy figures watching her, well-hidden from under the huge marble staircase.
The smaller of the two figures....

Well, never mind if it's past payout by now: you'll want to read this!

@felixgarciap delivers a happy ending in his we-write entry:

@free-reign

delivers a spooky Halloween vibe with a

@vida-blanca

brings a prince and a dangerous kiss to her freewrite based on The Manor prompt:

Past Pay-Out, Sorry I Missed it, but most of us don't have Big Upvotes anyway, right?

Trying to make excuses for my flagrant disregard for the rules

We writers care more about the #comments, however nice the upvote can be--right? So....

@hlezama and @felixgarciap

[Nacho The Healer: WeWrite #8: Partner Contest]

How did I not see this earlier? There is SO MUCH to see and read at Steemit. How did this one escape the Friday Favorites? We need to cast our nets wider.

@hlezama, this is fantastic and I'd love to see a movie spring from this character:

....many things were beyond his understanding. He had witnessed miraculous healings as well as horrendous and irreparable damage caused by words uttered or written on paper, even by an insect sent on a killing mission. He had seen respectable women lose their minds overnight and appear naked in the streets or gather a gang of lecherous bastards by the river banks...

I love Nacho. I love his healing powers, and in @felixgarciap's part two, I love Nacho's his decision to take his knowledge to a new land where it will be appreciated.

Also past payout, another freewrite by @hlezama is clever, satrical, allegorical, and entertaining.

And the comments (#TheComments!) show how much one writer can pack into a short space. What looks like a farce, "Keystone Cops" variety, is really a telling observation about humanity.

Forgive my audacity, but I must call attention to other endeavors our #freewrite member Henrry is taking on. Translating poetry to English - now that is a challenge! And instead of getting paid for this herculean effort, Henrry is donating all proceeds to the poet @oacevedo, Oswaldo Acevedo.

In Henrry's words,

He (Acevedo) invites the reader to tune in “stellar frequencies” and conceive an existence that does not obey time or space constrains. The poet’s call is the call of the humanist who, in the best tradition of Walt Whitman invites us to sing the song of oneself, while at the same time celebrate the grandeur of a cosmic democratic vista that would allow us to become one with the world and every living creature in it.

Don't miss the comment section! (my favorite refrain)

Be warned, though, you'll have to read a lot of Henrry's posts to catch some of the great dialogues they inspire. Two of my favorite commenters are @quillfire and our own @owasco, who comments,

owasco (61) in ulog • 3 hours ago

Girl, you go around reading long threads from a month ago?! I mean, it's cool, and it's nice to run into you like this,but how do you find that time? How do you even find the posts? xo

You know how I find old posts:

#Follow the authors, and follow #hashtags! *

Here it comes...

#Hashtags matter!

Typos matter in #hashtags,

and I don't mean to embarrass anyone because we all suffer the occaional typo, and one of the most frequently misspelled is #theluvbug. Get one letter wrong, and your post will be the only one in the misspelled category. Who's going to find it there? Here's an example of the lonely consequence of leaving out the letter "i' in #we-write:

I almost never trust myself to type a name, even (especially!) the short ones. Eg., I can easily mis-type : @mgaft1 as @ mgfat1, and nobody will likely notice, unless someone tries to click on that name and call up his more recent posts.

#original-content is a hashtag that alerts @curie to new posts.

If you investigate #oc and #ocd (Operation Curie Delegation), you may also visit becquerel.io to see a record of the most recent posts upvoted through Curie curator/reviewer operations and leave thoughtful comments on them for your chance to win!

@fitinfun now a curator for @tipu and can give out some good votes!

Click on the image below to get to her post. I've tried to explain and use #tipu myself, but I kept running out of funds after so many auto-upvotes. Now @tipu has changed since "The Fork" (hardfork).

Today I got on the list to be a @tipu curator.
@tipu has changed from whatever it used to be to a new system now after the fork.
The project is just getting off the ground with changes, and you can read their updates here: https://steempeak.com/@tipu

See the leaderboard of curators here: https://tipu.online/curators

The basic idea is that we little people can curate posts for others (and our own posts) with the big SP @tipu has. It is 2.5 million SP with most of that delegated from someone else.

@TheLuvBug was launched in March 2018 and has been doing its utmost to support the really hard workers here on the Steemit platform by upvoting and resteeming their content. It would be AMAZING if we were able to support more people, more often - and with your help, we can do that!

I don't know much yet about this one, but #WhaleSlap! comes to mind:

My experience with @slowwalker or how @Art-venture project came to live

In August of 2018 after being a year on Steemit and having 1000SP we decided to help small users, who despite of being talented were undervalued. We @stef1 and @myskye decided to ask for delegation but so that it is transparent and the Delegator know that SteemPower will be used only for undervalued Artist we decided to create completely separate account so @art-venture was born.

FWH-faves.png

Another #shoutout to volunteers who deliver the new day's prompt

@deirdyweirdy, @whatisnew, @wonderwop, @owasco, @fitinfun, @botefarm

And here's hoping the busy-work will not keep them from WRITING.

I tried that job for a while, and I can tell you, the Prompt Delivery Team members deserve recognition.

QUESTION for those who've read this far:

Do you think the logo from two years ago is better? @byn is so clever with graphics! I don't evenknow how to remove the red # for week number. The drawback to this logo is that #FreeWriteHouse is missing from it.

@iamraincrystal, We will never catch up. There is just SO MUCH out there and so little time!
You do a great job every week of nominating your own favorites. AND freewriting regularly as well. You go!!

Using your photo as a teaser to get readers guessing (well, some might not immediately recognize you!) and get them to keep reading to find the photo source.... uh, gives me an idea... planting Easter Eggs in the weekly post, just for fun, or even for prizes. First person to complete a scavenger hunt wins $1 SBD. Or more, if any fun-loving, freewriting whales want to get in on the fun. Why am I still online right now... so much to do in "real" life today!!!

I'm not even sure @curie's comment contest increases readership all that much.
Readers!
It's not about prizes and money, but having an audience, right? Am I mistaken in this? My husband shakes his head, laughing, when I say writing is all about being read. (And I don't mean it in a popularity contest kind of attention.) He says it doesn't matter. Write for yourself...

oh honey it matters if you are read!!!! It might not be ALL about being read, but that is a major motivation to write, major. Tell him to go mow his lawn.

LOL!!!
I care way too much about way too many things. Revisiting a book I should have internalized when I first read it 10 or more years ago: "Awareness" by Anthony de Mello, a Jesuit in India, very Zen and urging detachment. People don't want to be awakened, he says, and that must be why I failed to "wake up" and achieve the kind of detachment he describes (I keep confusing detachment with apathy). Some people awaken instantly, in one flash of insight, but I'm the late bloomer. Eh. Watch me bloom soon!! THANK YOU for reading and now please be WRITING, @owasco!

@carolkean I so much love what you are doing. You know that there are no rules for you! I am so grateful that you are doing this - and once in a while is great!! I love the history lesson, the teaser, everything, really. Your creativity knows no bounds and we are so lucky that you are part of the Freewrite House.
That said, I don't ever want this to be a chore for you and totally know that sometimes, we just have to do less. I am in that phase with steem right now. Hopefully soon, I can do more again. but right now - it is what it is...
All my love to you and big hugs!!!

You're very wise to choose "to do less" - you are missed, of course, but you have to take care of yourself first. And your adorable grandkids!!! (I got to see mine this weekend - not for nearly long enough of course)

your volunteer job lol
Thanks for recommending mine. And for including my silly comment to you.
So now you know I READ THE WHOLE THING.
I'm going to read all of these, I swear! Good thing so many of them are wewrites, because I've already read all of those.

Nobody has time to read ALL these - least of all if it keeps you from your own writing!
You have sooo little writing time as it is!
Thanks for your kind words. Just got in a short time ago from a very long day, La Guardia, delayed flights, a near heart attack as I ran like hell to catch the connecting flight. We are home. Enough said.
Four days to catch up on !!!!

LGA (you were pretty close to me) is my least favorite airport next to Atlanta's. Boy do I hate that feeling not knowing if you'll make it, running running running. I'm a big fan of having enough time to get an airport massage.
While I love being away, coming home is always a mass of work catching up. I imagine it's that same for you with that hacienda and its creatures that you live in. Aren't you glad now you don't have goats?
Welcome home

YES it's good to be back, and no, I'll never get caught up.
Our connection in Charlotte was supposed to last an hour and a half, time to visit an author friend I've never met in real life. Good thing I told her not to bother making a 20-minute drive to meet me face to face for a few minutes. We'll continue to trust internet photos and phone calls to know we're real. :)
I'd LOVE love LOVE to meet you face to face sometime. So many Steemfest goers have done just that. One of these days..!!!
