Community Service

As early as 07:00AM, members of my community in Teken Quarter, Mile 4 Nkwen of Bamenda in the North West Region of Cameroon gathered around the two trips of laterite we had placed at the entrance to our community. Our goal was to use the laterite to fill the pot holes on our road as well as clear the bush at one side of the community entrance.

Community service on Monday?

Yes, every Monday is a ghost town in the English Speaking Regions of Cameroon. As such we engage in Community Service.
For two hours we worked tirelessly and behold, we cleared the bush and leveled the laterite. Then one of our community members supported us with Bananas and another one used his H3 Hummer Jeep to compact the road.
At the end of the day, the entrance to our community became clean and leveled.
Community service has always proven to be one of the most effective ways in dealing with community problems. Some of the benefits of engaging in community service as a community include;

  1. It strengthens the relationship between members of the community. When people work together, they tend to develop more love and concern for each other, hence it contributes in building a more peaceful and loving community
  2. It reduces community expenses. Since we did the work by ourselves, we saved the money which was supposed to be used to hire someone to do the work for us. We will use this money for other urgent and important community initiatives.
  3. It’s physical exercise, hence good for health and wellbeing.
  4. It helps to develop skills for members of the community.
  5. It’s fun. All the interesting stories we share working together and all the laughter are priceless. Working as a community

These are just a few advantages of engaging in community service as a community.
How is community service done in your community?
In my community, we announce it and then every member of the community comes out for the work to be done. Failure to attend always attracts a fine from the community. After the community service, we go for refreshment during which we eat and drink together as members of one community. How is it done in your community?
