COMMUNITY OF THE WEEK CHALLENGE - 10,000 SP up for grabs

avatar
(Edited)

Communities are here, and it's looking groovy.

Now we must make the best of them, grow them, nurture them, and get the crowds flocking in.

That's the potential and the promise.

I believe Communities on Steem have four main uses...

.1. To help people find more relevant information to fit their interests.

.2. To encourage engagement amongst like minded folk.

.3. To improve retention on the platform through #1 and #2.

And the BIG ONE for me...

.4. To attract more people to the Steem platform, by providing the interest and social engagement that makes them want to try it out and stick around.

Curation

An important part of running a community will be the quality of the curation.

Rewarding the best and most relevant posts to gradually build up the overall quality and attractiveness of the Community.

This may not be a primary goal for all communities, but in terms of an overall 'upping the game' and increasing retention it is likely to play a key part for most.

Some communities are fortunate enough to have big curation partners - like @midlet's OnChartArt community with @ocd.

But for many, particularly smaller communities, lack of sufficient voting power may hold back their development.

Community of the Week

To help with this I am creating a 'Community of the Week' challenge and offering up to 10,000 SP delegation to one or more of the best communities each week.

This may be the whole 10K SP to one community, or I may split it between two or three communities.

The delegations will be awarded for a minimum of a week at a time.

This is all experimental and I don't know how much interest there will be so I will be modifying as we go along.

Judging Critera

As this is all pretty new there is going to be a certain amount of making it up as we go along, but these are some of the factors I am going to be looking at to start...

  • Number of Subscribers (& Members)

  • Number & frequency of posts

  • Quality & relevance of posts

  • Presentation of the Community (description, rules etc)

Then I will be looking to find out...

  • How the Community is promoting itself within Steem

And most importantly...

  • How the Community is promoting itself OUTSIDE of Steem to attract new people to join Steem and their Community.

How to Enter

To enter the challenge you must...

  • Register your interest in taking part in a comment below this or subsequent posts, clearly stating the name and hive address of your community

I will then start watching your Community.

The closing date for this first round of the Challenge will be 9pm UTC on Sunday 1 March.

Before that time, the Community Owner/Admin or one of the Moderators must make a post giving their responses for each of the Judging Criteria above.

That post must be titled Community of the Week Challenge entry for XYZ Community and the link must be added to your initial comment registering interest.

Include #communityoftheweek as one of the tags on your entry posts.

Rules

For now posts should be in English - although I will expand this if the Challenge takes off.

Posts should be concise responses to each of the criteria, rather than long essays. Evidence of external promotion should be included.

Communities should have a minimum of 20 subscribers to enter. Although I am open to persuasion if it is a very niche community.

Communities should ideally have a separate designated curation account to receive a delegation.

The Challenge will run as long as there is sufficient interest and it continues to serve a useful purpose.

I reserve the right to modify how the Challenge is operated as it progresses.

Let's get these Community Parties started...

This is a great idea @pennsif. Can't wait to see how this all evolves from here. It's such a massive step up.

I'm hoping Communities can kickstart a lot of new activity and new interest in Steem.

But it will require some hard work, resourcefulness and creativity to make the best of the opportunity.

I do not know. I think that the communities should have been introduced with Steemit in 2016. The user retention and the user activity would have been better nowadays. A lot of people left (and leaving) Steemit and the Steem blockchain since then. Mostly since the end of 2017.

Save all the effort.... We all know that #steemsilvergold is the best community here on steemit. We were before "COMMUNITY'S" arrived and now its just brought us closer together. Lol

The idea is great. until I read what is only for communities in English. for now, the communities, serve only to close the reach even more completely of the people that already in case we did not have many possibilities of diffusion. They have made all publications absolutely invisible outside anyone up to a recognized community. literally, users have become rodos into slaves of people who controlled healing and now control communities. In summary. Nothing from the communities, pessr that I like the idea. Nothing favors the less favored, nor does it favor quality content. there will still be the same crap content, within the communities as in the most used label cures. Nothing changes. The situation of the less favored people on the platform worsens.

I thought about trying to publish my blog here again, but ... The platform is not yet open to other languages. The platform at this time. Do you have my publications in a lost world? How do you want me to invite people from outside to enter here, if registration takes too long and you have to pay? I have a community of 3,500 people, that if I moved my content to Steemit, maybe they would follow me. But without instant registration, it is totally unfeasible. Also. I can't be risking moving my contents from one side to the other, with all the work that entails. I would love to boost Steemit, I would love to build my community here, I would love to publish exclusively here 100%. But for that I need to be allowed. Open records are required. We need a better indexing of the contents .. We need to talk less about Steemit. To not scare people, and generate more diverse content.

And well ... you see, what exists. Is that. There is no other point of focus. I've been thinking for years that Steemit just wants to live in Steemit. And that is the biggest problem. Years. The line continues to turn towards the same point of view, the platform does not open to the people we want to announce outside of here. To the people we want to attract more people to the community, despite everything. Then nothing .. To continue working from the shadow. Waiting for the platform's point of view to change, so closed. In every way. At least with the communities I can publish more calmly, my contents that do not matter to anyone else, here. I have even shorter content.

Namely..

Thanks for your comments. If there is sufficient interest in this challenge I will be adding Spanish next.

Account creation now takes usually about 2 hours during week days, and it is free via steem.com

Try posting more regularly and building a community around you. There are many Spanish speakers on the platform from Latin America particularly, as well as Spain.

I would love to nominate ReggaeSteem.io, but the website is more active than the hive community. Can we nominate a tribe?

This challenge is only for Hive Communities at present.

It will be interesting to see how Tribes and Communities can best be used together.

What we do is encourage posting from Front end and that auto populates the community plus they get a little LOTUS boost. Oh hell, may as well nominate us too, I work so darn hard at it lol x

Dear @pennsif

Excellent and very stimulating idea.

I still have so many questions and worries related to HIVEs/communities, however it's obvious to me that noone ever provided tool that would be as unique and innovative. I surely congratulate entire STINC team for finally delivering on this promise and I hope more people will find communities worth their attention.

I know you're aware of project.hope community and we will definetly join your contest and promote it within our team.

Resteemed and upvoted already,
Yours, Piotr

Communities have a lot of potential.

I am interested to see how creative and resourceful Community organisers will be with the toolset so far available.

I would be interested in the question why they introduced the communities nowadays? I mean Steemit is online since 2016. This should have been (at least amongst) the first thing(s) to do after introducing Steemit. What do you think?

Yes, that is sure. But most of the users left the platform in the previous 4 years. Nowadays the user engagement is very low. We will see whether this recently introduced communities will increase user engagement or not. I write engagement, and not activity, because nowadays there are many active users on the Steem blockchain (nowadays there are 23-31 000 daily active users), but most of them are focusing only on their own posts, they do not care about other people's posts. Nowadays the average number of comments per post is between 1-3. Many posts do not even get any comments. Most of the comments are bot comments, and even if people write comments, they mostly write bot, bot-like, spam, spam-like comments. So sad. To be honest, Steemit and the Steem blockchain is currently the worst social network, which I have seen so far.

Yes I agree very much about engagement - it is sad to see so many posts with no comments at all.

I am hoping Communities will grow numbers again but Community owners will need to work at it.

You're very right. Lack of engagement is a killer.

Let me introduce you to project.hope community - we're quite small, however we managed to build our group around several very active users who share similar values and interests with topics like technology, blockchain, AI, economy, business, marketing etc.

Perhaps you will find our community worth engaging with (or even joining):

Can I nominate two communities that I am a part of that do fabulous work. Both of them are not exclusively English language posts (they are both international) although a significant proportion of them are in English.
They are:
PowerhouseCreatives (hive-114105) @steemitbloggers is their curation account
and
Freewriters (hive-161155) @freewritehouse is their curation account

Thanks!

Great initiative!
I want to participate for two communities, @radiosteemit and @club12, both are sisters and walk hand in hand in this beautiful social network called Steemit.
In charge of both, my person but helped in everything by wonderful work teams formed by Steemit users, active daily in Steemit from their blogs, in their profiles as from the communities.
Recently we started to offer part of our content in English. We are a Hispanic community, Spain and Venezuela are the countries that stand out but there are more nationalities.
We work for the comments in the publications and we reach comments in our activities, main activities # Challenge12Votes and # ChallengeTop10 among several radio activities where we promote different artists who share their art in Steemit. Today from the discord of RadioSteemit we will offer live music for example.

I really liked the proposal read, we are physically and emotionally prepared to receive the help they offer and to be able to grow more easily in these waters that we like so much to enjoy.
Initiatives like this are necessary and help us to motivate the communities.
Thank you @pennsif!

Great idea. Hopefully you will give it to communities who are just starting out and need the bump, but if I know you that's the point right? Xxx I'd register for NM but there's lots of great little communities that could do with a head start xx
