I remember when I was a new engineer for the industry, a lot of the Operations managers would typically request I attend the meeting.

The older engineers were confused.

Why were the managers asking this junior to attend while there were so many seniors capable of relaying the message?

To be quite honest, I was confused myself.

So one day, I decided to ask.

The manager's name was Debra.

I asked Debra why she asked me to attend these meetings and not the other senior engineers?

And she responded with:

'Because you talk in a way where we can understand.'

Aha!

The senior engineers were a little TOO qualified.

They were so qualified to a point where they would speak a foreign language at times.

'The circuitry for the capacitor has drainage fluid which will require a new restoration template blah blah blah.'

In the world of the senior managers, they were simply relaying the information.

For the Operations team, they heard a whole bunch of mumbo jumbo.

We all speak a secret language.

And typically this language is a passion or something we do for a living.

When I hear a plumber talk about their profession, they use words I've never heard of in my life.

When I hear a Facebook ads expert talk, they often drop concepts which are new to me.

When I hear a chef describe a certain dish....well you get the point.

Learning a skill isn't just learning a skill.

In many ways, it alters us a person.

And if we are not careful, this can be a bad thing.

'A bad thing how?'

Well, we may make the social sins of being overly complicated with our delivery.

Just because it's easy for us to understand does not mean its easy for the other person to understand.

Realize this...

The person you are speaking to may have no clue about the details of your profession.

Nor may they have the same passion.

This is why you need to use analogies & keep it simple.

Don't try to talk in a way to prove how competent you are in your field.

More often than not, they do not care.

They just care about comprehension.

Which is why most of my blogs are written in a way where a 4 year old can understand it.

I don't do this to dumb myself down.

I do this to exercise my simplification muscle.

In the world of communication:

1. The great communicators turn complex subjects into simple ones.

2. The bad communicators turn simple subjects into complex ones.

This is why I follow the mantra:

Get to the point.

That's it, no need to over complicate it.

It's great that you have learned the secret language of your skill set.

Kudos to you.

Now be even more great and make someone else can understand it as well.

Each time you are able to relay your message effectively, each time you will melt away complexities in the convo.

This allows for a fluid dialogue.

The next time you catch yourself being too detailed, check yo' self homie!

Then remember the 4 golden words.

Get to the the point.

Your convo partner will thank you.
