Wilhelm Karges, Fantasia in D

avatar

The Fantasia in D, written on folio 25 of manuscript Am.B 340 is again an anonymous work. It is again an Echo Fantasia and has many similarities with the preceding one. I am inclined to think that this composition, like the one preceding it in the manuscript, is based on an original by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. However, as my knowledge of Sweelinck's music is fairly limited, I do not know which Sweelinck composition might have served as a model for this composition.

Unlike the preceding one, this Fantasia feels rather incoherent. It just starts somewhere and ends rather unexpectedly with a surprise modulation to D. It is a nice short Echo Fantasia for anyone who wants to try his hands on the genre, just not the best of the Echo Fantasias in this manuscript.

The recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sampleset, made by Sonus Paradisi, of the Schittger organ in the St. Martini-kerk, Groningen (http://www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organs/netherlands/groningen-st-martini.html).
