Rudolf Löw, Erstanden ist der heilge Christ

The Sächsische Landes- und Universitätsbibliothek in Dresden posesses a manuscript of 12 organ compositions by Rudolf Löw's hand. It is his opus 1, which he dedicated to his teacher Carl Ferdinand Becker.

Löw mostly emplois forms and procedures from the Baroque era with a harmonic language that is sometimes slightly romantic. Löw's choral prelude to "Erstanden ist der heilge Christ" obviously takes Bach's Orgelbüchlein as an example. In is again a good example of Löw's usage of form and idiom of the Baroque. In just 8 bars the soprano voice plays the choral melody while the other play an accompaniment in a continuous ongoing motion. The result is not as refined as Bach's examples but certainly it is a nice piece to play.

The recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sample set of the Silbermann organ of the Stadtkirche Zöblitz by Prospectum (http://www.prospectum.com/index.php?language=english&id1=2&id2=8).

I'm interested in getting this sample set, but with 27 pedal notes would that be limiting for repertoire that I would play? For instance, how could I play Bach's F major Toccata?

For most Baroque literature 27 pedal notes is enough. And for BWV 540 you would have to work around it's limitation. Either by reworking the pedal line to avoid the notes higher than d1, or by playing those notes on the manual.

I would not let that small limitation hinder you too much. The real organ is a fantastic instrument (the prinicipal alone is to die for) and the sample set is faithful representation of the original.
