Johann Bernhard Bach, Christ lag in Todesbanden

avatar

Johann Bernhard Bach (1676 – 1749) was second cousin to Johann Sebastian Bach. He was organist in Eisenach, and there he worked a few years together with Georg Philipp Telemann. Most of his organ works we know today survived in copies by one of his pupils, Johann Gottfried Walter. Though few of his compositions survived till the present day, what is left shows high quality. The chorale prelude “Christ lag in Todesbanden” is one of them.

As Vetter in his prelude (https://beta.peakd.com/secretsoforganplaying/@partitura/andreas-nicolaus-vetter-christ-lag-in-todesbanden) Bach emphasizes more the darker side of the text. Written in a plainthree part te4xture, the choral melody can be played with a solo register. The accompaniment is based on motives of the choral melody in fore imitation. All in all a simple effective, nice to play composition.

The recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sampleset, made by Sonus Paradisi, of the Hinsz organ in the Reformed church in the Midwolda (http://www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organs/netherlands/midwolda-surround-sample-set.html).
