Ernest Grosjean, Absoute

Ernest Grosjean (1844 - 1936) published "Pièces pour orgue ou harmonium", a set of 56 pieces in two volumes, in 1902. The first volume contains 33 easy pieces, that can be played without the use of pedals. The second half of this volume is a section called "Pièces Funèbres", pieces intended to be used during funeral services. "Absoute" is a rite and prayer of the Catholic liturgy that ends the funeral ceremony at the church. It includes a song that implores the total deliverance of the deceased's sins, then a sprinkling and a censing of the body. Though it is a sad occasion, Grosjean writes msic that is not without hope and in its own way commforts the grieving.
