Favourite son premiered on the 6th of May, 2021 and it garnered a lot of interest especially from the black christian community. This is because it stars a popular gospel artiste, Jonathan McReynold. His co-star, Rotimi, the Nigerian-American actor and model also spiked people's interest in this movie.

The movie is about two brothers who are passionate about music and very much committed to being in a gospel group. Their father, the Reverend and head of their church is still very much in control of their lives and are both under his tight leash.

Denzel and Camden try to live up to their father's expectations, do music and uphold their christian faith all the while facing all temptations and troubles that accompany their fame.

My Take

Like I mentioned earlier, this movie has gained popularity in the christian community (Nigerian christian community actually because a lot of young sisters happen to have a crush on Jonathan McReynolds). I was eager to see his performance because he sure is a good singer and generally, the arts are intertwined.

What put me off first was the story, same old same old. I was bored almost halfway in and kept wondering when it'd get better. It's a typical fake pastor life story that kept reminding why I pay no mind to pastors.

I was pissed off at why two grown men became chickens and would be at their father's beck and call when he's an obvious shitty person of a Reverend. They didn't have anything to lose and should have stood their ground from the start.

I also think Jonathan McReynold's acting is poor even for a debut. His expressions didn't hit it at all. Rotimi's acting was no different from his role in Coming 2 America where he looked clueless in all his scenes.

The movie is so cliché and boring and I rate it a 4/10 because the singing was nice and helped put me to sleep.
