A Red Reboot
Be still my beating heart... I can't tell you how many times I have seen the original Red Sonja movie. I don't remember it coming out in 1985, but I do remember it was in the regular carousel of movies that the FOX network would play in the middle of the day on Saturdays.
It's one of those movies where if you are flipping through the channels and you see it on, you just have to stop and watch it. It isn't that it was good. A lot of people actually will tell you it was straight up horrible, but for me it is iconic and so very memorable. I was always fond of the wizards and warriors type of fantasy stuff and having a movie of that sort with a female lead was just beyond comprehension back then.
In addition to that, I was a young impressionable male, and at the time Brigitte Nielson was in her prime. It was truly something to remember.
Apparently, I just found out it is based on a marvel comic book. There is this whole Red Sonja world that I never even knew about. More important is the fact that they are rebooting the franchise with a new movie that is in the works.
I know it will not come close to the original, but you can bet I am on board.
I am a little concerned though.
So the lead is going to be played by none other than Hannah John-Kamen from Antman and The Wasp.
Now, I am sorry, but for a character named Red Sonja, I would expect maybe a little bit of red hair somewhere... Sure, you can dye your hair, but it just doesn't feel like this was the best call in terms of casting.
I guess there is something to be said for diversity in Hollywood and just casting a pale skinned red head probably isn't the smartest move these days simply because it more closely resembles the original.
I don't know. I just would have expected someone more like Christina Hendricks, Amy Adams, or Isla Fisher to fill the roll. I can easily picture any of them as Red Sonja.
Even Nicole Kidman, maybe...
I don't know, what do you think?

Who would you have cast in the lead role? Who do you think is going to play Arnie's part (if they even have that character in the reboot).

Oh yes, I remember Red Sonya. As a huge Arnold S fan I loved the Conan movies he made and this was one of the spin offs from that if I'm not mistaken. She was big and beautiful.
Yeah, like I said, as a young man it was pretty memorable!

Wasn't the original cast already really diverse? Well, you never can tell these days and it wouldn't surprise me if Arnold's role was replaced by a woman so we have placate the "alphabet people" as Dave Chappelle once said. I would watch it for sure but I don't like what they have done to other reboots such as Clash of the Titans and of course Conan was just awful. This kind of plays into what Ricky Gervais said at the Golden Globes about how Hollywood has gotten lazy

You are probably right. Yeah, as I was reminiscing on this movie, I totally forgot about the young Asian prince. It was a quite diverse cast for the time.
