Do we need a Steem Charity organisation like the Binance Charity? Could A Dollar A Day provide the starting point?

avatar

A number of crypto organisations have their own charities.

Binance Charity is a well known one that has featured in the Satoshi's Treasure project recently.

Steem has had a number of charitable projects like @youarehope, @adollaraday and to some extent @fundition.

But Steem has not had any prominent initiative that has carried the Steem name.

Would having some sort of Steem Charity help promote Steem to the outside world?

Of course with the current low price of STEEM it might not be the ideal time to start such an enterprise.

But Steem is still here, there is still money in our ecosystem and we need to get out there and tell the world we exist and can do good things.

We may not be talking millions, but we could be looking at thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars.

The A Dollar A Day project, which I ran actively last year quite low key, raised over $5000 in just a few months.

Even with the low steem price I think a more coordinated effort could still raise significant amounts.

One of the issues with the charitable giving model, as raised by @starkerz, is that it can just be an outward drain on steem.

Money is raised in Steem, money is donated to steem based charitable groups, they convert the steem to fiat...

That model would need to be reimagined.

The donated Steem would need to bring value to the blockchain.

That value I believe could come from marketing and PR value.

A new Steem Charity would promote outside the blockchain that it has funds available to give out as grants.

Organisations interested in applying for grants would need to open a steem account to present their grant application.

Recipients of the grants would need to agree to some form of media coverage such as press releases, newsletter mentions or social media exposure.

This new model is still a work in progress but I believe it has potential to give Steem some profile and some purpose.

The focus would be more outward looking than before.

If people think this idea might have some mileage I would be happy to develop it further.

And if anyone would like to help work on the project do let me know.

Thank you.

Oh damn, I totally miss-clicked, so sorry for the downvote. I obviously changed it!

I love the idea, and I've been thinking about this several times. Both in the past and in the present. The last time I thought about something like "steemfundme" was when I stumbled across a couple of different fundraisers on gofundme.

Both fundraisers was in similar situations like myself. No luck with money and School to finance/afford. Both of them was very successful too, so I've often thought about creating a fundraiser for myself too, to see if I could get as lucky as them, but I'm not really that type of person. I rarely ask for help, as I'd rather be on the giving end instead of the recieving one so to speak. I'm not sure I'd feel completely comfortable sharing a bunch of stuff in public either, which is why I came to think about a "steemfundme" in the first place.

Giving is awesome, and we could definitely attract a bunch of new eyeballs to Steem by having something like this.

Yes! Absolutely, as long as there were conditions that should be agreed to prior to the grant, and the grant could be withdrawn should one side not hold up their end of the bargain. This could work

A new scheme would need a bit more 'rigour' in its structure and operation than the activities to date.

If we push it to the outside world it would likely need to stand up to more scrutiny than previous internal activities.

A starting point will be to somehow scope and test the initial level of funds that might be achievable to get a feel for what sort of audiences we could promote grant opportunities to.

Sounds like a good option and worthy one. I did put a bit into dollar a day but as you say the drain on Steem disappeared plus a recent hiatus means it needs to be built up again 💯🐒

Thank you for your support for A$AD - much appreciated.

I am hoping this new potential reincarnation of A$AD will be able to do equally good work and more.

First of all, congratulations to you for all the charity related work that you do.

When you are running more generic campaigns it is more challenging to raise funds. Content is diluted, attention isn't focused, transparency is harder to maintain ...

So, a general platform with very specific campaigns would be the solution. I think :)

Like a kickstarter for charity.

Maybe the new functionalities with #hf21 could be used for this?

I landed here because I am looking for a Steem based charity to donate to. Can you help me out?

It should be something transparently managed, direct and accountable for. Thanks a lot!

Ps: a personal remark - last year I have run a direct campaign on Steem for a local family in need. We collected over 600 Euros which was great. This was possible only with direct and constant involvement. And the price of Steem was higher :)
