What Used to Be

Visiting my family over the last week has given me a lot of perspectives I had not realized since it has been years since I walked around these areas and seen how things change. As I have been on a personal journey as well, realizing that we are surely not forever and how quickly things can change; it is amazing how they happen before our eyes without acknowledging it. Even looking at how grey my hair is getting these days goes unnoticed in our busy everyday lives.

I took this picture while going for a walk earlier this week as there are some Hot Springs down the road to where I was staying. Not having cable tv and very little internet made me be a bit more active alone this week which was good for some reflection. This area was once home for a Golf Course that I used to enjoy playing as it was one of the more natural landscapes I had ever experienced in a golf course. There were few manmade lakes or gaps as the designers really did a great job to use the land they had to make a fun but challenging course.

It brought back memories of inviting my dad to be my caddy as he didn’t really play. I remember getting more frustrated than me as he would see me drive a perfect 250 yard shot down the fairway just to shank the next shot 10 yards into the water or woods! He also thought that putting was the easiest part of the game and would often ask me how could it take me two shots to get to the green and need to putt three times! Funny but just a reminder of how my dad was.

A walk further down made me think even further as the clubhouse and the next door hotel are now shutdown but for different reasons. The Golf course could not survive the economic downfall from the Financial Crisis as not many could really afford paying $50 around here and the hotel could not survive the strong winds of Hurricane Maria in 2017 despite a recent renovation it was undergoing. However, the neighborhood has continued to develop and become much more residential than it once was. The roads and sidewalks are under construction which have given me a place to workout this week. The Hot Springs have also gone through a great upgrade which has allowed to get some great therapy for my sore legs after all the jogging!

Lastly, it has got me thinking about my HODL mentality when it comes to investments. This place was also my first ever Real Estate investment as the promise of a growing residential neighborhood and having the opportunity to buy a golf course facing property was too good to be true for me. My first official mortgage which continues to haunt me today as it reminds me of the days when 6.5% interest rates were a good deal for properties going up in value. Nothing remains constant but my ability to HODL through makes me look forward to better days!
