The Holidays are mostly great to catch with family and friends but also bring up some discussions that are often not that great. I have always been what you could call a “tech pioneer” in the family as I never hesitate to try new technology as they come along. I recall being the first with a iPhone and even touchscreen laptop before tablets became a thing. I have also been a part of some that have not got off the ground like a pen scanner that would scan words from books to the computer when I was in College and taking notes. Like last year, the family has already started to ask for my annual update on Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies.

While last year’s attempt to convert a couple of friends and family did not work despite given a couple of wallets out and demonstrating the benefits of the technology with examples, this year’s question was related to my blogging endeavors with Steem. It came up as the family saw me disappear for an hour while I made a post. When asked, I actually got excited as I started with “Steem has become much more than blogging!” Unfortunately, I lost them soon after as they continue to focus on price and income instead of the potential. Their argument is what I get in return for the precious resource of time I am putting into it. Given my profession, it is clearly a convoluted assessment as it really doesn’t apply well. I clearly make more in my professional activities but I challenge as to who that is benefiting in the longer term relative to what I do here.

However, it definitely got me thinking about how I spend my time as even my daughter made a comment that made me reflect on my engagement. She insinuated that I did not have time to help her with homework because of my focus on Steem when I get home. This is clearly unacceptable so I needed to act.

In one of the family reunions, I got together with the only person I was able to convince to get into Steem and had been quite active. I noticed he had stopped for a bit and asked why. He mentioned that Hard Fork 21 was the trigger but had been thinking of it prior to it. While he continues to engage on Splinterlands and helps me with my second account for Daily Quests, he believes that he was not adding value or receiving it with his posts. While shorter, he thought they could be of interest of particular communities. That led me to explain what HF21 really did and how actual communities can change things.

However, we got to think about how we can help each other out here. My constraints have been the time to engage and sometimes create content. I still believe that these are fundamental to our building capabilities here on Steem so we thought of giving something a try. I will be posting his content here at least once a week when I could not create one myself. While I thought I could then transfer half the earnings after it is paid out, we saw that Steempeak provides the ability to assign beneficiaries to divide from inception. This always gives me an opportunity to use that front end more which I have wanted to do for a while now! We are excited about this as the last time we did it while I was on vacation, the post did really well!

We also discussed the recent updates from Splinterlands as it has been the one thing that has kept him engaged. I shower him my updated Collection after the recent Untamed release and it was fun to play a couple of games with the new cards. He did not get into the Kickstarter as he has focused on being a player to grow based on not buying. While I have helped his Collection with some trades and deals, we look into potentially doing some rentals. Him being a gamer can provide some support for me as I have been ok at the opportunity to earn from my Collection. I am looking for him to do some administrative things for me to see if something can come out of it.

While I was unable to get others from the family involved, we spent an hour talking and think that this could be mutually beneficial for us. It was enough for me to be encouraged about Steem as it is always a minority that adopt technology early. I even got talking to my other half on the way home about her getting back to sharing her crafting hobby using my account (still neer to think about that one). Spreading Steem is a slow but learning experience so time will only tell. As usual, we must always be resourceful and able to adapt as things shift and change around us. I will be looking forward to feedback as we deploy this in the coming days!
