Monthly Fitness Update (Sept 2019)

Another month closer towards the end of the year and achieving my goals set at the beginning of the year. After continued challenges to fall back in line, I was able to get back into the routine of following a preferred diet despite the challenges of travel and workload this past month. While the beginning of the month started out badly as my consumption of carbs could not be controlled, I was finally able to get it behind me as the focus on improving my health becomes more important for me as I continue to feel the impact of aging.

I am now really only two weeks into getting back on track with my diet but starting os always the hardest so I am encouraged by my progress so far. I am also trying to get back into the Intermittent Fasting cycle immediately as it has also been a key factor in accelerating the results I normally get when I remain disciplined. While no progress has been made on my weight because of the late restart, I am at least staying the line and not getting any worst in terms of being above my minimum goals. However, as last month, the weight is definitely taking its toll on my performance when it comes to my workouts.

Taking time to workout for at least half hour every day continues to be an achievement given the challenges with work and travel. Planning has been essential as waking up early ahead of a busy day to get a minimal workout in has been the key to achieving these metrics. However, intensity in the early part of the month was a challenge because of everything going on. Even though 30 minute walks do not get near offsetting the carbs I had eaten earlier in the month, it was the consistency of getting a workout that was important to me as I often lose control of my time management and things like working out and eating right are often the first tasks to suffer to the detriment of my health. Seeing the chart of completing most of my metrics over the last couple of months has been the driving force of keeping the goal within my reach despite failing in some aspects.

The second half of the month not only was my time to get on track with my diet but also the start of my more purposeful training around the upcoming 5K race I do every year as part of a charity event. Every year, the race serves as a test of how I am keeping up with my fitness and health. It was the sign three years ago for me to get started once again as I could not run for it and barely completed it under an hour. The next year, I was able to jog and complete in under 30 minutes which continues to be my benchmark. However, this year will be a concern because my weight will be a roadblock as it has reduced my ability to keep up a faster pace for an extended period of time. While I have been able to keep up the stamina and endurance for well past the distance, the speed will probably be an impact.

As I have been training for the 5K, @actifit has been a companion along the way as it provides an additional incentive to keep consistency while improving my health. The days I am able to get a 5K run done makes my goals a breeze to accomplish but on my off days, it becomes a challenge. However, I can not explain how much looking at my activity on the App being below my target encourages me to move more than I would otherwise do. For example, I continue taking the stairs at the office instead of elevators as it provides a great opportunity to get extra activity in as well as combat the hours of sitting behind a desk. I was excited to read about their upcoming developments that seem to be a great extension of their community and the demonstration of the potential of what it can bring to the ecosystem as it continues to integrate technology and services of the fitness world.

With only three months left to the end of this year, I still have a long way to achieving my goals. Given the importance of these goals for the benefit of my family and myself, I remain focused and disciplined to keep up the work to enjoy its benefits in the future. We often forget how easy it is to get off the path and the difficulty to get back on the track for just sustaining something good so it is important that we become self awareness and focus on those small achievements and milestones along the journey.
