I previously posted a post about Cinderella's story (Disney's 2015 live-action movie), and commented that there were many versions of this tale.

Today I want to share with you one of the versions that you considered the bloodiest in this story. Today I want to talk about the Cinderella story written by the Grimm brothers. This story is one of the many stories that are part of a book by these authors.

Several people refer to this version as bloody; and if there is enough blood in the story and it is somewhat strong ... This is a relatively short story, it was written by the Grimm brothers.

I like this version even if it is not so minutes for all audiences (anyway I love the animated and live action version of Disney)

The story begins like this...

A very rich man, he had his wife sick both had a daughter. When the woman knew that the moment of her death was approaching, she called for her daughter; the mother said goodbye to the girl telling her to always be pious, and that she would always protect her from heaven. Finally the mother dies.

After that the girl went every day to cry at her mother's grave; Besides, she was always pious and good as her mother told her to be. Time passed and the girl's father married again. The new woman brought her two daughters home; which were very beautiful but with hard and cruel hearts.

The moment his stepmothers and the two daughters arrived, the difficult times began for the poor orphan. They started treating her like a maid, they took off her beautiful dresses; They put on an old shirt and gave him a pair of old Swedes. They also forced her to do all the chores around the house, so the poor girl practically became a maid in her own home; Consequently, it was filled with dust and ashes, so her stepmother and stepsisters began to address her and refer to her as Cinderella.

One day the father was going on a trip to the fair; so I ask her two stepdaughters that they wanted them to bring them, they asked for beautiful dresses and pearls; while Cinderella only asked the first branch to touch the father's hat during his return trip.

Upon returning home, the father gave Cinderella the branch he asked for, and his stepdaughters the beautiful dresses and jewelry they asked for. Cinderella with the branch her father gave her, she ran to her mother's grave, planted the branch on it and cried so much that watered by her tears, it soon became a beautiful tree. Cinderella went three times every day to see the tree, she cried and prayed and a little bird would always rest on it, and when she felt any desire, the little bird would instantly grant her what she wanted.

The king of the kingdom organized parties at that time, which had to last three days. And I invite all the young women in the country to attend the dances in the palace; This he did so that his son, the prince and future heir, would choose one of those maidens as his wife. The stepsisters heard the news and immediately told Cinderella: "Hairstyles, clean our shoes, we're going to a party at the palace."

Cinderella tearfully begged her stepmother to let her attend the dance, she also wanted to go as her stepsisters; however, the stepmother and stepsisters made fun of her; Telling her that since she intended to go to the dance... so covered in dust and ashes, she also had no dresses or shoes to go to the dance. But Cinderella insisted; and the stepmother said to her: "a plate of lentils has fallen into the ashes, if you collect them in two hours, I will let you go".

Cinderella immediately went out to the patio and asked the birds for help. Then two white doves and two turtledoves entered through the kitchen window; they alighted on the ashes, helped to collect the good grains and put them on the plate. Not even half an hour had passed when and the task was already finished; the birds left.

Cinderella happily brought the plate to her stepmother, believing it would allow her to go to the dance, but the stepmother told her: "Everything is useless, you cannot come, because you don't have a dress and you don't know how to dance; they would laugh at us." So the stepmother turned her back on Cinderella and left with her proud daughters.

Cinderella was left alone at home, went to her mother's grave, and under the tree, and began to say: "Little tree, give me a dress; that is, gold and silver, very well woven". And at that moment the bird threw her a dress embroidered in silver and gold, and slippers with silk and silver decorations.

Cinderella quickly got dressed and ran to the palace, where her stepmother and stepsisters did not recognize her, and believed that it was some foreign princess. Seeing her, the prince went out to receive her, took her hand and danced with her. And during the night I dance alone with Cinderella.

The prince and Cinderella danced all night, and when she decided to leave, the prince offered to accompany her to find out where the beautiful girl with whom he danced came from. But Cinderella escaped the prince, jumped into a loft.

At that moment the prince told his father what had happened, and told him that the foreign maiden had hidden in the loft. Then the old man thought: "Could it be Cinderella?" And, asking for an ax to be brought to him, he began to knock down the loft. But there was no one inside.

And when everyone got home, they found Cinderella in the ash, covered in her dirty clothes; for the girl had jumped behind the loft and ran to the tree in her mother's grave; there she took off her beautiful dresses, and deposited them on the grave, where the little bird was in charge of collecting them. And immediately she went back to the kitchen, dressed in her dirty clothes and old shoes.

The next day, when the second night's dance was about to begin, her parents and stepsisters left, and Cinderella immediately ran back to the tomb tree and said: "Small tree, give me a dress; that is, gold and silver, very well woven". Then the bird gave her a much more beautiful dress than the day before and when she appeared in the dance with that dress, she left everyone amazed by her extraordinary beauty; the waiting prince took her by the hand and danced with her all night, again.

When Cinderella decided to leave, the prince followed her to see which house she entered, but Cinderella went into the garden behind the house where there was a beautiful big tree, from which hung beautiful pears; Cinderella climbed up to its branches and the prince could not know where he had gone, but he waited until his father came and said: "The foreign maiden has escaped me; it seems to me that the pear tree has jumped". The father believed that it must be Cinderella; He sent for an ax and knocked down the tree, but there was nobody in it, and when they got to the house, Cinderella was sitting in the home, like the night before, because she had jumped over the tree and ran to the grave from her mother, where she left the bird her beautiful dresses and took her old clothes.

On the third day, they all left the houses and once again Cinderella was her mother's grave and said to the little tree: "Small tree, give me a dress; that is, gold and silver, very well woven"

Then the bird gave her a dress that was much more beautiful and magnificent than the previous two, and the shoes were all gold, and when she appeared at the dance in that dress, no one had words to express her amazement; Again, the prince danced all night with her alone.

When Cinderella wanted to leave, and the prince to accompany her, she again escaped with such lightness that she could not follow her, but this time the prince had the whole fish ladder smeared, so that she could not escape so easily, Cinderella managed to escape but his left shoe was stuck on the stairs; The prince lifted the shoe and saw that it was very small, pretty and all gold.

The next day the prince goes to Cinderella's house, and when he arrives he said to the father: "I have decided to be my wife who this gold shoe suits". The two stepsisters were happy, because they both had very beautiful feet.

The oldest went to her room to try on the shoe, accompanied by her mother. But there was no way to insert the foot, because his toes were too long and the shoe was too small; When she saw him, her mother gave her a knife and said: "Cut off your fingers! When you are queen, you will not need to walk."

The young woman cut her fingers; He put the shoe on his foot, hid his pain, and went out to meet the prince. He got her on his horse as if he were his girlfriend, and he left with her, but they had to pass by the side of Cinderella's mother's grave, in whose tree there were two doves, who began to say: "Don't go any further, stop to see for a moment, that the shoe is too small and that girlfriend is not his owner."

Then the prince stopped, looked at the girl's feet and saw the blood flow; He turned the horse and returned to the girl with her mother, saying that this was not the young woman she was looking for. And asked that the other sister will try on the shoe. Then the other sister went to her room, and although her fingers went loosely inside, there was no way to get her heel in. Then the mother gave her a knife and said, "Cut off a piece of your heel. When you are queen you will not need to walk."

Then the young woman cut off a piece of her heel, put her foot in the shoe, and hiding the pain, went out to see the prince, who got her on his horse as if he were his girlfriend, they left; but when they passed the tree there were two pigeons that began to say: "Don't go any further, stop to see for a moment, that the shoe is too small and that girlfriend is not his owner."

The prince stopped, looked at the young woman's feet, and saw the blood flow, then he turned on his horse and led the girl with her mother and said: "This is not the one I am looking for, either." No, replied the husband; I had a poor girl from my first wife, whom we call Cinderella, because she is always in the kitchen, but that cannot be the girlfriend you are looking for.

The prince insisted on seeing her, so they must have called Cinderella. She washed her face and hands first, went out to see the prince; the young prince gave Cinderella the golden shoe; She sat down, took her foot off the heavy clog, and put on the golden shoe, which fit her perfectly, and when the prince got up and saw her face, he recognized the beautiful maiden who had danced with him, and said: "This is my true girlfriend." The stepmother and the two sisters turned pale with anger, but he mounted Cinderella on his horse and left with her, and as they passed the tree, the two doves said: "Go on, prince, go on without stopping a single moment, Well, you already found the owner of the little shoe".

When the wedding day came, the false sisters went to accompany her and take part in her happiness, and when leading the bride and groom to the church, but when directing the wedding procession; the eldest went to the right and the youngest to the left, and the pigeons carried by Cinderella on their shoulders bit the largest in the right eye and the youngest in the left, so they each bit one eye; upon their return the eldest was placed to the left and the youngest to the right, and the pigeons stung each in the other eye, so that both stepsisters were blinded all their lives by their wickedness, falsehood, and envy.

Now once you have told what the Grimm Brothers Cinderella is all about... you will realize that it has some similarities to the obvious Disney version without part of the snagre and blindness.

Now a question comes to my mind...

  • How come Cinderella's father let his own daughter be treated this badly?
  • And like the prince asks if they have another daughter... and Cinderella's father says no and refers to her as Cinderella.
  • What kind of father is Cinderella's father? And what punishment did the stepmother receive?

I particularly find it a very good story, not the pink and sweet tale that we are used to (I like the Disney story a lot), but still a good story, I confess that I even laughed when reading about Cinderella jumping in the trees.

I hope you liked this version of Cinderella.
