In the world of Fir trees, the Grand Fir is like the Rolls Royce model, as far as I am concerned. Read on, and I'll tell you why.

First things first, here is a bit of background on this little bonsai tree I started growing a couple years ago.

From a side view, we see the upright nature of this tree, slightly curving with the bends I made when the tree was wired.

From above, we see the bend in the large top branch. It arches forward, wanting to hug the viewer in a warm embrace.

All of the new green buds coming out are in full view here. That is what I wish to draw our attention to for this tree.

A Week Earlier

The needles on this tree stay encapsulated within the buds it forms in the fall, and they stay protected until the weather is truly warm enough to benefit from the full sun.

Mid April is when the tree tends to open, during the season's first warm rains.

So why is this tree the Rolls Royce of Firs?

Well I consider this tree the luxury model. The needles are glossy and deep green. They retain their strength and color on the tree for years before they start to fall off. Even in low-light, branches and needles will maintain their beauty. On a mature tree, it will look very full an lush inside and out.

And let's not forget that sweet cinnamon pine scent. Can trees have a new car smell? Because this one does it for me every time. You just have to crush one needles to get a fresh burst of the fragrant oils to fill the air.

It's no wonder this tree has been a favorite choice for as far as Christmas trees go. Great scent. Deep green. Smooth needles. Strong, flexible, silver branches. Lots of back-budding for bushy growth. And the needles stay on the tree for a long time, even without light and water. Grand Fir is a true luxury tree meant for being the backdrop for all the best memories.

Personally, I'm a big fan of this tree. Other popular Firs such as Noble Firs and Korean Firs, these are noticeably different with lighter green needles that grow upright on top of the branches, making neatly shaped tufts. Whereas Grand Fir needles only grow on the sides of the branches, or what I call fringe.

Bonus

Here are a couple bonus flower photos from the garden. This flower has just recently bloomed.

This flower opens in the day time, and closes at night when it's cold.

Sometimes insects will hide sunbathe in flowers like this, and enjoy a blanket of warm, soft petals to tuck them in at night.

Truly a miraculous color. The flower is about the size of a nickle. It will probably last a couple weeks. New flower buds are shooting out from the ground nearby.
