I woke up today with Cocaine Country Dancing in my head
It's worth noting at the beginning that I am neither an advocate for cocaine nor country dancing. You do what you want, but I steer clear of the white stuff because I have an addictive personality and also because I don't want to get some shit laced with fentanyl or something and die from it. I'm not afraid to die, but I'm not looking to either.
Another thing worth mentioning is that I really didn't like the song the first time I heard it. It is not the sort of thing I've listened to much in my life. However, my musical journey has ventured into some more country-leaning stuff lately. It's usually the more traditional, outlaw, or folky kinds of country music, though. Not the more modern, almost pop sounding stuff. This song, I would say, definitely sounds more like the latter. This was suggested to me by YouTube music based on some of the other stuff I've been listening to lately.
This song is catchy AF, though. I've come around to it. I've been listening to the album Room 41 by Paul Cauthen a lot lately. It's resonated with me somehow. The video shows a humorous side of Paul Cauthen that I wouldn't have had suspected existed based on his musical persona.
As much as I've been enjoying the album Room 41, I have to say I'd love to hear some stripped down versions of the songs. It's a bit over-produced for my tastes. As an example, he's got a song on the album called "Prayed for Rain" that starts off a little closer to what I'd like to hear. Just an acoustic guitar and a Cashesque baritone croon. I think he channeled Johnny Cash when he sang the words "cold, dark, and pale" but the rain. This song also opens up into a much bigger arrangement. At that point, it sounds more like modern indie rock than country music to me.
Okay, that's probably enough about the second song, since that's not even the one I woke up with in my head today. I just like to provide some context for the music since many people reading it probably have no idea who some of the artists are.
What draws me most to Paul Cauthen's music is almost certainly his voice. He's earned himself the nickname "Big Velvet" because, well, he's a larger dude with a smooth-as-silk baritone voice.
This post is part of an ongoing series in which I document the songs which are in my head immediately upon waking. I've been making them for a long time now.
Do you wake up with songs in your head regularly? What song was in your head this morning? Comment below, I'd love to hear from you!
