2021 Goal or Obsession?

I have always been a fan of establishing goals every year to measure progress on many levels. However, I have been learning that focusing on a handful of goals has been easier to focus on for celebrating those accomplishments. I have also given my goals priorities this year and my most important one is my health which is key for anything else to get done.

However, there has been a goal on my mind to begin the year that I think has become an obsession. Given the great milestones I accomplished in 2020 by eliminating a large amount of debt, I now find myself committed to finishing it all off and become debt free. While the amount still remains high, there are paths I have considered that got get me there this year.

Unfortunately, most of the paths that accomplish this in 2021 also have tradeoffs that are questionable. For example, I have considered selling more invested assets I have given some of the appreciation seen this year. However, it will sacrifice further future opportunities in certain assets. I have also seen the amount of liquid assets I have reduced given the focus on paying down debt. This increases my risks as the economic uncertainty may make cash king at a certain point.

This obsession has been constant as it feels that I associate everything I do to it. I am grateful to even have the opportunity to think about this but it has caused some anxiety at times. I guess I have to focus on my first goal of my health too but again it will help get me relaxed if I am able to wake up one day and say I am debt free. 2021 could be the year!
