Have You Heard #2: The other side

For the second edition of my new shoutout series, I want to share one of the most influential books that I have ever read.

No Wall They Can Build: A Guide to Borders & Migration Across North America

Using storytelling, the author tries to show how we misunderstand what immigration is, how it works, and why people choose to do it. It’s written anonymously by someone who spent over 10 years volunteering for a group that patrols the Arizona border to aid migrants and refugees. The most intense part of the book is that tells real stories: it isn’t political rhetoric, it isn’t posturing, and it doesn’t use hyberbole. The author just tells their story about what they’ve seen and heard during their time working at the border.

No matter where you stand on the issue of immigration, this book is a no-nonsense must read. The author is just trying to explain the issue from a different perspective and ultimately tries to help the reader understand why and how people make this life threatening journey.

At the end, you really understand that there’s so much more to immigration than just building a wall. These are people who risk their lives and their families, and there’s an entire industry built around illegal immigration, with more players than you might imagine.

By the end of this book, you will have a whole new perspective about the people who have made this journey. It is quite simply the most powerful book that I have ever read. However, be prepared for some tears, it’s a heartbreaking masterpiece.

Bonus: The Feminine Mystique

Another amazing book about self-discovery, liberty, and being okay with doing what you gotta do.

Some years ago, I volunteered at a neighborhood outreach. The community had recently experienced an influx of South American refugees. I never inquired as to the clients' status, but it seemed many of them lived in the shadow of legitimacy.
All the people who came to the center were poor. Language and legal status just complicated their challenges. These were people who wanted to work, achieve, raise their children. They weren't immigrants, illegal or otherwise to me. Just people.
