Thoughts on time management

  • Being busy vs Being productive

We tend to confuse being busy with being productive, when they are totally different things... I remember reading in Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, that it' s not the same thing an urgency than a priority, usually, I consider myself being productive when I invest most of my time in my priorities and not in my urgencies.

An urgency, for example, would be reading emails or answering calls, while a priority, is an activity that despite not having an immediate effect at the time of doing it, has a great impact on your life in the long and medium term, priorities could be for example, reading 20 pages a day of a book that will improve your way of thinking, invest a certain amount of time to develop a skill, take time to talk and listen to a person you care about, and so on.

Something curious is that, commonly, urgencies are activities that we carry out on purpose but they are also situations that we have to deal with and we have to attend to them whether or not, and in the better scenario, delegate them, instead, the priorities are usually activities that require a greater purpose and self-consciousness, it's not something that is imposed, it's something that we have to find and that depends 100% on ourselves.

  • Time, time, and more time

As you may have noticed, time is a fundamental word, and practically everything revolves around time and how we use it, these last few months I have given greater emphasis to managing and investing my time and I have discovered the uselessness of a large number of activities that I used to do, I have learned that human beings can live with much less than we believe, and I am not just talking about material things.

Once you are aware of what an urgency is and what a priority, it is when you really begin to realize the importance of time and how to use it.

  • Time Management

    Consciousness, self-control and discipline

Here is when time management becomes a real challenge, and it is when your emotions and your mood gets in the way, come on, we have to accept ourselves as we are, and the truth is that we come as an all-in-one package, a mixture of all our dreams, goals, fears and expectations fluttering 24/7 in our brain, it is difficult to take advantage of time according to how we manage it in an agenda when one day you don't feel good because something happened, or when you just don't feel like doing something.

And from then on it's where things get even more interesting, because the mere need to take advantage of time allows us to awaken things in ourselves that we didn't know before.

In my case, for example, I used to have a hard time doing something when I didn't feel like doing it, but now, that I understand what it's a priority and I know them first hand, I put those priorities before my mood, with training, for example, there have been days when I felt like shit but I still did it, and thanks to that I've got to where I've come, and the most curious thing of all is that once you do a priority activity despite not having the desire, you tend to feel better than before.

Take Action

Now that I know my priorities, and having gone through this 2-week process in which I lost full control of my time, necessary periods, I invite you to rethink your purpose, we have no choice but to take action.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, I invite you to take action, sometimes it is the only thing missing, blessings, see you in a next post.

"we come as an all-in-one package, a mixture of all our dreams, goals, fears and expectations fluttering 24/7 in our brain"

I couldn't agree more with this, and speaking from personal experience, when your mind is split between too many 'urgencies', one usually ends up feeling overworked & overwhelmed, which makes us susceptible to disrupting the very things that we spend all our time working on and thinking about.

This is why prioritizing is so important, as it enables us to claim our power back and instead redirect it, into focusing on the few things that truly matter and bring the most benefit & positive growth to our lives.

Great post and thank you for sharing!! Cheers! :3
