I Waded Into Water That Was Waste High.

When we moved into our house we were told by our neighbours that sometimes the road we live on gets flooded and last month we found out first hand how deep the water can get around here.

It started off by a simple phone call from a friend telling us that the river at the end of our road was about to break its banks and that we should start to think about moving out of our house for a few days.

I thought he was joking but when I looked out side and cars were turning back around on our road because they couldn't get through I knew things were bad.

I went out with a friend to have a look and we didn't think it was that bad, here is some pictures that we took around 5pm

I decided to wade through the puddle and it wasn't even up to my knees.

The water was high, as where you can see it coming to there is another banking about 10 feet down.

Some cars tried to get through the water and others just turned around

My wife is a Facebook user and she was telling me that the 3 entrances and exits to our village were closed due to flooding this made my heart race a little, and then we found out that the church was opening their doors to anyone who was stuck in the floods.

I didn't think that things had got that bad but then I turned on the news and they were telling us how we had a months worth of rain in just 24 hours and that was a big problem.

I put the kids to bed with a little worry in my head but I knew that if I had to get them out I could, and then while they were sleeping I started to load the car up with things that we might need, such as some sleeping bags and a bit of food.

My neighbour came out to do the same, we decided to walk down to the start of the flood together to see how bad it was and from just a few hours things had got worse.

There was no road, it was gone, and this was about 50 yards away from my house, which is a little scary.

The water in the puddle I was in the first time was now up to my knees.

I wanted to go further around but there was a problem every where was high with water.

While others on our road popped out to see how bad it was, we all talked together as now we knew there was no way out of our village.
People were talking about packing up and moving higher up the road until it went back down.

Then while we stud there a guy of 80 turns up in his 4x4, he wound down his window to tell us that the other ways ouf the village were that deep that there was no way anyone could get through and that this was still the only way out.

We had a laugh with the old guy who thought that he was going to be able to get through this way, he was telling us that he was glad to have a landrover as it could go through anything, and with his health conditions he wouldn't last the night in the cold.

He tried to make his way through the water but he got stuck half way through.

I turned to my mate and we knew that there was a problem now, and 80 year old with health conditions shouldn't be stuck in the water like that.

We phoned 999, and they were as much help as a wet paper bag, the info they gave us was, he will just have to sit there because they wouldn't come out to a car that had drove into the water, they are not a breakdown service.

Just as I put the phone down there was a ambulance car that decided to try and drive through it, it seemed like he had no care in the world and he drove into it like he was driving down the road.

Now there was two stuck in the water and I knew this was bad.

I made the decision to go into the water and get the old guy as I couldn't leave him there, and I started to wade in, it got deeper and deeper and I was up to my belly button with murky water.

I was so cold but I kept going until I got to the old guy who was now standing on his seat with water pouring into the car though the windows.

The paramedic had got out of his car, and when I got to them both the paramedic was talking to the old guy while radioing for help.

It was crazy, I ended up checking 4 cars to make sure there was no one stranded in them, it turns out that everyone in the other cars had gotten out and it was just us in the water.

The paramedic said he didn't realise it was as deep as that as he had just drove though it an hour ago to a job and he made it fine.

I waited in the cold water for 45 minutes until the rescue services came to get them out, then I had to make my slow way back through the water till I got to my side of the village.

The scariest thing about walking back was the swans who had decided to use the water to there advantage and were popping their heads up and down to catch food.

I didn't think about the what could happen to me, but when I got in I was so cold, My mum said I was stupid for going in the water, she was telling me about a guy who got sucked down a drain and drowned which I told her that with the size of my belly there is no way anything is sucking me down.

We had to keep an eye on the water level, and by the next morning we found the damage that was done, doncaster was under water, the next village near us had been under water, but yet we were still ok with none of the house on our road flooded which was lucky.

It was a crazy night, but we decided to make the best out of a bad situation.

We took our radio remote control boats out into the river at the end of our road with some of the kids, it was great fun and lightened the situation.

Most of the neighbours came out with coffee in hand, smiles and laughs could be heard and it was great to see a community to come together when we were all in need.
