Who remembers this show?

Who remembers this British sitcom TV show from 1991?
It ran for a total of 8 years.

It was called 2 Point 4 Children.

It was a very popular show in the 90’s based around a ‘normal modern family’ who get in to all kinds of bizarre situations due to crossed wires and misunderstandings.
(Ironically this sounds like Modern Family...)
This show made essential scheduled evening viewing in the 90’s.
I remember watching it as a boy. I would have probably been about 10 years old I reckon.
(I remember fancying Jenny.)

The show got consistent viewing figures of around 14 million per episode.
Quite staggering really, compared to today’s dying scheduled format of broadcast television.
It seems The Big Bang Theory got similar sized viewing figures in the US upon broadcast, with the most being 20.37 million of during season 9.

I came across 2 Point 4 Children just the other day as a stroke of nostalgia triggered by the theme tune I heard on a radio shows ‘guess the TV theme tune’ quiz.

I didn’t actually guess correctly (in case your were bursting to know) but it took me on a meandering journey in to my TV viewing habits as a lad, conjuring up some other classics along the way. Like The Detectives with Jasper Carrot.

Anyway, to the point.

So I’ve been re-watching some snippets of 2 Point 4 Children episodes when I came across this moment.

Pay attention to the conversation between 4.34 - 5.51 seconds..

Looking at the date of production, this show was made at the cusp of the internet becoming a mainstream household idea, with the Wold Wide Web being introduced in 1991.

It’s so strange to see a show like this that captured the zeitgeist of the day, reference with such uncertainty the very thing that is so necessary for us to function with our daily lives right now.

The internet.

(THE BLOODY INTERWEBZ!)

It got me thinking about how blockchain and crypto is something that is doing the exact same thing right now in 2019.

It’s something that when brought up in conversation is largely met with puzzled queries and paranoia over its uses; connfused mispronunciations and short lives rants.

In the landscape of modern life blockchain is relatively new technology and right now the average person really knows very little about it.
Even me.
I only just about understand it.
I feel like I can grasp basic use cases and how it can improve our lives, which seems to be miles more than the average joe.

But wasn’t that once where the internet crossed paths with our lives?
That unknown thing called email that changed literally everything about how we communicate?

I see the future going one of two ways; a smoking nuclear apocalypse OR a world where technology and transparency changes our lives for the good of humankind.

Funny what an old sitcom can put in to perspective...

Cheers for reading :) @ashtv
