Alien Technology? Bitcoin, Cryptocurrencies, "Credits" and Science Fiction!

avatar

Sometimes I can't help but wonder whether the enigmatic Satoshi Nakamoto was an avid science fiction reader.

If you've ever read much science fiction, or even watched much in the way of "set in space in the future" films and TV series, it's a fact of life (in those scenarios) that people still use some kind of "money" (for lack of a better term) to engage in transactions.

Some weird posts... for this weird post...

LONG Before There Was Bitcoin...

Long before anyone dreamed up Bitcoin, science fiction's space faring friends of the future were using something often referred to as "Credits" that seemed to be pretty much valid anywhere, regardless of whether you were on Future-Earth, in your space ship, or on some far away planet where everyone is green and has tentacles.

This "money" was seldom visible and seemed to involve people mostly sending something through little handheld devices that resemble iPads, or something similar. Or — if the things were actually physical — they would be "scanned" to test whether or not they were real.

Sound vaguely familiar? Like a cryptocurrency... and wallet keys for verification?

Does kind of make me wonder where the underlying inspiration for Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies came from...

Did We REALLY Figure All This Out On Our Own?

Of course, it probably borders on "conspiracy theory" to wonder out loud whether some of this "technology" we use today is actually alien technology.

Yeah, I know... now we are starting in on the sort of thinking that might cause someone to call for the guys with the padded white van and people in white labcoats.

I suppose you could just as well argue that "human ingenuity knows no limits," and be equally right.

Either way, part of the reason it fascinates me is that we seem to — as a species; as cultures — to have these entire repositories of information... the discussion of which automatically relegates us all to the nearest nuthouse.

I'll be the first to admit that there are plenty of whackjobs wandering around among us... but just who gets to determine what's "whack" and what's not? Why is it perfectly OK to hang a singing fish on your wall, but not to wonder whether some of our ideas came from an offworld civilization?

We humans have some very odd values, sometimes.

In Other News...

Looks like I am heading towards another period of "sporadic posting" as we enter into the "show season" on the arts and crafts show circuit... I'm going to be going to quite a few of these with Mrs. Denmarkguy in the coming week... and it can be a pretty exhausting gig to get prepared for a few days, then head out at 5:30am in Saturday mornings; set up a temporary shop to welcome to the public by 10:00am, work all Saturday and Sunday, pack the whole thing up Sunday evening and head back home...

... only to sort everything out, try to restock and reorganize... and then pick back up and do the same thing the following weekend.

That's the end of the creativity business most people don't really get to experience.

And, on that light note, I think I'll call it a day!

Thanks for reading!

What a delight you are. I don't particularly think aliens gave us Bitcoin, but what an odd and wonderful comparison to Big Mouth Billy Bass.

May your arts and crafts be artsy and crafty.
