How I’ll Be Celebrating The BIG 40!

In the middle of the month, I turn to the ripe old age of 40. That number sounds fairly scary and I was dreading it for some time, but in recent months I have calmed to the point of embracing it. While I’m nowhere near where I wish I was in terms of mentally, financially, and professionally...I have kinda taken this opportunity if you will, to really start hustling and doing what I need to do to accomplish specific goals.

I’ll delve into that as the day creeps closer. Today’s rant is more about my wife harassing me to be a productive member of society. The past year, I’ve definitely been more of a hermit. It’s not that I don’t enjoy going out. I quite do actually. I just also enjoy the comforts of home much more as of late.

Watching a show while snuggling with my pup is a perfect night, and since I’m down to one pack member left...I’m really trying to cherish those minor yet major moments a bit more.

So when the wife asked what I wanted to do...my answer was simple. Nothing at all. Maybe order some food or something minor. I don’t like a big deal made about me. I don’t like to inconvenience folks and I definitely don’t want anyone to spend dumb money on something that my heart isn’t into.

Still...she’s right in pushing me. The past year I haven’t been around my friends as much as I’m the past. Partially due to the cards life dealt but a portion of the blame lies at my feet. I just have been fairly lazy about...chillin.

At first she was suggesting driving to Asbury Park which is a shore town about 30 minutes away. It’s filled with an exciting nightlife atmosphere that...to be honest...I absolutely hate. Having my friends and family drive out to bar hop to drink overpriced cocktails and food, while we shout to each other in crowds is not my idea of a good time.

So when we were driving back from a late Christmas with her family last week, I couldn’t escape the grilling. She was insistent on me doing something as it was a milestone. She asked “if you could do anything within reason...what would it be?”. I thought for about a minute before a wonderful idea popped into my head.

”Dodgeball!!!”, I muttered.

She looked at me as if she smelled a rank fart and she said “dodgeball?!?”. I said “did I stutter bitch?!?”. Ok...I didn’t say that, but it sounded badass to write. She did however question if I had been hit in the head with a wrench or if I was serious. I. Was. Dead. Serious.

Years back, I had filled in last minute for a buddy’s dodgeball league. I had a blast and vowed to do it again. Well, as I turn 40 I’m realizing that I’m not getting any younger. These things I keep putting off will one day be the impossible...so I need to focus on living my life and enjoying it. That includes accomplishing goals. No matter how small they seem.

So after some searching, we found a kickass gym at the Toms River YMCA and on the 15th, we are renting that fucker out for 2 hours of competitive dodgeball. We have a decent chunk of friends and family who have committed already and I think it’s going to be a blast.

At first I think she thought it was silly but as we are telling more folks about it, they all seem pumped for it. Afterwards, we will pop back to my house for some food, drink, and games. That’s my idea of a great birthday.

For the first time in years, I’m actually excited for my birthday. My 30’s were by far the most challenging of my life. In many ways, I’m glad to leave them behind and kinda start anew. Now’s as good a time as any...right?!?
