Looping Owl

So I normally do not gravitate towards amber ales. However, when they are aged in whiskey barrels you can count me in. I picked this one up at the brewery in Traverse City. Right brain brewery Has always made some pretty solid beers in the past so I figured I’d give it a try.

The details behind this one is its Right Brain’s Northern Hawk Owl Amber Ale aged in Grand Traverse Distillery whiskey barrels. This process yields a beer with oak, vanilla, and whiskey notes.

My tasting notes showed that this one was definitely a whiskey forward beer. Is little to no malts flavor. I find it has less amber qualities than I was expecting. There was little to no nalt characteristics. The whiskey flavor dominated both the aroma

There is a subtle sweetness and deep woody oak flavor that tries to balance the beer, but again it’s outweighed. There is a definite alcohol warming in the finish which is pretty surprising considering the 6% ABV.

Overall, It’s a pretty one noted beer. I’m glad I tried it, but it’s probably something I won’t buy it again.

I have been drinking a lot of whiskey lately, so I am going to have to give this one a try. I really enjoy amber beers too, so it sounds like it would be right up my alley. The wife and I might be heading to Battle Creek in the future. Any breweries in that area you can recommend?

If you are going to BC it might be worth the drive to go to Bells in Kalamazoo. Dark Horse in Marshall is also worth the drive. They have good pizza if you need a lunch or dinner spot.
