Kushy

I’m sure many others are feeling the anxiety of businesses opening back up. In the US we have seen a surge in new Covid cases as parts of the economy open. Personally, I’m disgusted by all the people parting and gathering like covid has been defeated. In fact, many of these palaces that opened are seeing record cases and are now putting a halt or even reissues shelter in place orders.

At this point in time I will not be dining indoors for some time. I’m will to try a patio, but take out is definitely my preferred choice at the moment.

We have been on a bit of a vacation as our daily lives have been pretty stressful. So we decided to get take out from a local brewery, Rare Bird Brewery. They have done an excellent job adapting to the pandemic. My favorite part is they will can their draft beer which is a great alternative to store bought beer.

I was extremely interested in a beer they had on draft called Kushy Punch which was an American IPA. At 3.85 on Untappd that’s what I would consider a pretty solid rating for an IPA.

Poured from the crowler this beer had a complex amber to almost orange/red color. It’s has a finely packed white head that was pretty thick. Larger bubbles formed on the surface with my pretty aggressive pour. I also notes that this beer retained a good amount of head throughout the glass.

The aroma was slightly sweet with floral, fruity and citrus characteristics. The citrus learned toward grapefruit which paired well with the more floral hoppy notes.

The flavor was balanced and complex. There’s citrus, pine, fruits and a honey like sweetness that all complemented each other. I was so pleased by sweet to bitter transition that kept the beer from becoming overly sweet.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied with a decent amount of carbonation. It’s very traditional to an American IPA style. It’s not going to be too filling, but it’s not light like a lager.

Overall I was super impressed and excited for some take out beer. I prefer draft beer over canned beer. So this is a good alternative as it does not degrade the draft qualities.

I am with you. I am not ready to be back in a small space packed with people either. I can only think one place that I have eaten inside since this started and it was a little uncomfortable even though we were well separated from everyone else.

My wife and I are heading up to the UP soon and I had hoped to hit a couple breweries up there. We may just have to do the to-go option if they have it.

I say do whatever makes you comfortable. I don’t mind a patio so long as they take the proper precautions. Have a fun trip I’m sure it will be beautiful up there.

I hope so, we are heading to an area that my wife has never been to and it has been probably 30 years since I have been there.

That is where we are heading! Setting up camp at the base of the peninsula so we can head over to the mountains, down to the canyon or up to Copper Harbor depending on our mood that day.

Thanks I’m working on expanding my palate so I can describe beer better. I feel like a say the same things a lot. It’s more of a science than I could of imagined.
