Borran's Beer Review: Brooklyn Special Effects
Hello!
Today, I'm reviewing a low-alcohol (0.4%) lager called Special Effects from the Brooklyn brewery located in Brooklyn, New York. Malts in this beer: Munich and Caramel malt. Hops: Mosaic, Citra and Amarillo hops.
When breweries make Non-Alcoholic Beer, they usually remove the alcohol after fermentation, but Brooklyn have instead used a lazy yeast and malts that doesn’t produce much alcohol.
Description of the beer:
"Hoppy lager-style non-alcoholic brew with an unexpected citrusy aroma and pleasantly bitter finish."
Brewery facts:
- It was founded in 1988 by Steve Hindy and Tom Potter.
- Since 1994, Garrett Oliver has been the Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster.
- Annual production volume: 217,000 US beer barrels (255,000 hL) in 2013.
- Since December 30, 2016, the Carlsberg Group has an agreement with Brooklyn Brewery to distribute its beers in Europe, the UK, and Hong Kong.
Here's a list of their most well known beers:
Brooklyn Lager
Brooklyn East IPA
Brooklyn Summer Ale
Brooklyn Sorachi Ace
Black Chocolate Stout
Brooklyn Brown Ale
Post Road Pumpkin Ale
Defender IPA
Appearance: clear brown/dark amber color with a small white head.
Smell: sweet caramel, citrus hops.
Mouthfeel: light body, medium carbonation.
Taste: malty, sweet, citrus, tropical fruits with a light bitter finish.
Verdict: I must say, this is the best low-alcohol/non-alcoholic beer I've ever had. Lots of flavors and not so watery as they usually are. Of course, alcohol-free beers will never be as good as beers with alcohol but they have done a very good job with this one.
My rating: 3.5 out of 5. Well done Brooklyn Brewery! I will probably buy this beer again!
