Classic Pils

When searching for a good pilsner you are looking for a clean, simple and flavorful beer. You can tell a lot about a brewery by their pilsners or lagers. IPAs, Fruit beers and stouts all have added flavors which can cover up sloppy brewing or bad techniques. I once heard a beer expert say you always try the simpler beers because it will be evident if they know how to brew.

Pils is an excellent example, as it has minimal ingredients and requires the beer to be balanced to not throw off the flavor profile. Not to mention you can taste each individual ingredient so they have to use only the highest quality ingredients to not adulterate the profile.

The appearance is clear with a nice yellow to slightly amber color. There’s a fair amount of carbonation that streams in small bubbles throughout the drinking experience. The head is white with medium densely packed bubbles that fades fairly quickly.

The aroma is slightly sweet with a hint of bitter. I can pick up some malt and a slight bread notes
that’s warming and not overpowering.

The taste is smooth and clean. It’s a balance between sweet, better and dry aftertaste. Multi grain notes are very pronounced with more of those warm baked bread and barley characteristics they give it some complexity. A slight bitter finish from the hops leaves you wanting more without adding a floral bouquet like an IPA.

Well Phil is very light and refreshing. It’s the type of beer or you could have a few not feel full or bored. The carbonation tickles the tongue and leaves you wanting another sip. Overall, it meets the requirements of being a simple and balance beer. Well still packing and get them out a flavor with the use of such minimal ingredients.

Nice, Williamston. I used to work with some people who are/were from there. That is a good point about trying the simpler beers first. I will have to keep that in mind. I have been sticking with lighter beers while the weather is so hot. I had a couple Atwater Dirty Blondes the other night and this past weekend I was drinking the Keweenaw Pickaxe Blonde.
