2020 Nucleate

avatar

With covid raging in the US many breweries have canceled their summer events. Homes Brewery hosts a huge summer party called the Nucleate Beer Festival which celebrates their Nucleate beer. Though the 2020 event was cancelled, this beer collaboration with The Rare Barrel & Horus Aged Ales lives on as a symbol of the friendships and community of which Nucleate celebrates!

This beer is spectacular and is a mixed culture sour ale, fermented with a blend of house cultures from each brewery, aged in lavender gin barrels for 2 months, before refermenting on yuzu & Papua New Guinea vanilla beans. It’s then bottle conditioned with champagne yeast which creates one of the most complex and interesting beers I’ve tasted in 2020.

It pours a yellow/orange with a one finger tightly packed bubbly bright white head. This beer fades into some crazy lacing that clings to every surface of the glass.

The aroma is so developed. There’s a wild sour funk with lemon and various citrus fruit characteristics. There’s more complex aromas like sweet vanilla and floral lavender.

The flavor is sour and funky. It’s sweet with sour lemon notes that are present up front. The middle is earthy with vanilla and yeast. I get a slightly bitter finish that’s somewhat dry. It’s balanced, but the flavors ebb and flow between sour and sweet.

The mouthfeel is actually pretty heavy. This beer has some heft too it. I think it’s the addition of all the extra ingredients that’s make this feel more like a meal.

Did I also mention how cool the bottle is. It has a heat activated logo so if you scroll through the photos you’ll be able to see the change in graphic. As for my finial judgments on this beer all I can say is I wish I had more. It’s crazy flavor profile mixed with the backstory makes this one special experience.

At this rate, the rest of the year is gonna be boring with pretty much everything cancelled.

It’s true... If everyone stated wearing masks it would probably end sooner.

The label must be pretty expensive with heat activated ink.

That is a pretty cool bottle! It looks and sounds like they put a lot of time and effort into this brew. I heard the other day that people are concerned about a possible aluminum shortage because cans aren't being returned at the volume they used to be. Not sure how accurate that is...

I did not even think of that, but I can see it. I have not been returning my cans...

We don't return ours either. I usually wait for one of the sports teams from the local school to have a drive and I tell them to back their truck in! We made some cheerleaders really happy one year :)

I’m a bad environmentalist and trash mine... I use to take them back once a month and make a few bucks.

I hate taking them back so I either just recycle them or give them away to good causes. I think right now most places only let you cash in a maximum of $25 worth anyway.
