The other day, I was looking at my pictures, thinking of what could be done with them... I was inspired and started playing. Awhile (and 8 layers) later, I came up with this:

This work began its life as:

In order to make this transformation, I went through many steps.

• I found a CC0 (no attribution required, but probably from PXFuel) fantasy image for the background.
• I also found a CC0 cosmos image (probably from PXFuel) to add to the background.
• I duplicated the layer and began the destruction stages.
• Then, I began building with the background layers.

The layers I required. (From back to front - or bottom to top in Gimp way of thinking.)

• background layer of the cosmos.
• background fantasy layer at about 70% opacity as I wanted the stars to show through.
• duplicated/flipped layer of the cosmos for the reflection.
• moon reflection in the water at 70% opacity, mostly to dim it.
• the moon itself needed reworking as it needed to stand out from its background a bit better.
• the swans also were reworked at 100% opacity to make them really stand out.
• the next layer was finally my photo (without the sky) at 80% opacity to allow the cosmos and moon to shine through.
• the final layer was the rocks on their own to keep them before the moon and stars.

And that's how I arrived at this:
