"Angel or Devil or Debutante?" by Richard F. Yates
[Ink on found cardboard with digital embellishments. 2020. (Technically, this was DRAWN in 2019, but I count the publication date, not the creation, as the more important.)]
I enjoy a nice dose of ambiguity. With a drawing like this one, which is symplified nearly to the point of abstraction, I tried to include nearly recognizable elements to suggest a possible identity for this figure.
Are those horns or tufts of hair? Are the lower lines legs or the suggestions of a robe or dress? And that smear of a face, is it a smile or a mask or something else???
I like the idea of a composite creature, something with elements and attributes of several different archetypes, but that isn't easily categorized as anything in particular.
When I was younger, I wouldn't have felt comfortable sharing this drawing because of how simplified and sketchy it is, but now that I'm older and more indifferent, I'm happy to put this out there. I like it! (Particularly the face...) What are your thoughts? Too sketchy? Too simple? Feel free to comment below! (Trust me. I can take it...)
