Only few weeks left before the Halloween. Some Children are excited to do trick or treat and wear their best scary costume. We have a Halloween celebration here in my village wherein the children are invited to join, but it has a twist. Their costumes should not be bought from store. It should be recycled and crafted by themselves or with the help of their guardians or parents.

On the past years, I created KILLER CLOWN and JASON X, they are both male character. For this year, I decided to make a new one which is a female character, Maleficent, that is known for having a black curly horn with a staff/wand on her hand.

The materials used for this costume are:

  • old rubber mat
  • old bag
  • old slippers
  • electrical tape
  • old steel wires
  • glue stick/glue gun
  • old glitters
  • glue
  • masking tape
  • gawgaw
  • old newspapers
  • old stick
  • old perfume bottle

PROCESS

I drew the main hat/horn to have a guide while making it.

Then I started to create the frame of the horns.

For the base, I used the old head dress that I created for the festival in the past years.

I continued creating the frame and added lots of interlocking wires to make sure it will be tough and can't be bent easily

Next step, covering the part of the head with rubber mats.

For the horn part, I will use old papers for the first layer to cover it.

To fix the papers in their position, I covered it with masking tape for the second layer.

Then adding rubber mats to achieve the v shaped frame of the head part.

I am now done with the head frame and horn. Time to cover it up with newspapers, to lessen the rough edges.

I will use "gawgaw" as my paste because it is affordable and it hardens the newspaper when it dries.

Time to let it dry

While waiting for it to dry. I am thinking and searching for old resources inside my house that I can use for adding details on the Maleficent hat and wand.

I found this old perfume bottle and it looks great for the upper part of the wand(the crystal) where all the magic and stuffs come out.

The spray part of the bottle is fixed, so I removed it by sawing it.

And then combining the sticks and the perfume bottle to start forming the wand.

After that, I covered it with newspapers and gawgaw to make it look like wood and a vine crawled on it.

Time to let this wand dry and proceed to the hat.

I found this old slippers and the support of it looks great for the v shaped part of the heart.

Then I added an old cloth belt. I cut it and make some adjustments, so it will perfectly fit on the head part.

Then I added another support for the horn made from the sling of the bag.

It is almost finish, and I found another sling bag that I can use for the center part of the hat.

I just continued covering it, until i reach the center part.

ADDING SOME FINISHING TOUCHES

Putting some glitters to have a glowing effect.

Congratulations. I love your creation. He is very creative and great with the use of recycling materials. I also manufacture Steampunk weapons and costumes with recycling materials.
